Hey guys, couple of questions and maybe hopefully someone has some experience with this. rem 700 vs 22 250.
1.Does anyone here push them for distance? If so how far have you taken it with what kind of results?
2.Any experience deer hunting with this caliber? Big muleys out here and i wanna try something aside from my 308 this year. Plus this thing is a flat out shooter. Way more accurate than my 308 head to head.
3.What gr bullets would one reccomend for hunting deer. Its a factory barrel and im usually shooting 50gr vmax or 53gr smk.
thanks guys in advance

Re: rem 700 vs 22 250 questions

I will chime in .. I have one currently that is new in box, have had 3 in 22-250 in the past. Varmints to 600 bigger stuff further.. coyotes, large ground hogs.

I have not used one on big game, nor would I want to. I have heard of people using 22lr on deer.. not my choice. You can argue that it is all were they are hit etc.. I like Kinetic energy which the 22 250 lacks compared to a 308..

I would try a nosler partition in a heavy 224 caliber weight, think 60 gr and se how it does if I had only one gun and caliber to choose from.
If It were me I would stick with the 308 for big muleys...

We have shot them to as far as they'll reasonably go, the problem is that they almost always lack the twist to shoot the heavier bullets one needs to operate at 7-800+ yards.

A while back while shooting a steel disc hung on a wooden fence post my brother was shooting 52 SMK's at 800 yds, I was dingin it good with my Ar shooting 75's, but we never could see his hits. When I went to recover the target, I found a 52 sticking out of the fence post, just barely poking in, a gentle sweep of the hand knocked it out.
As far as hunting mulies with it,I think you run into the same problem. I have killed a Mule doe with a vital shot 50 gr bullet, but I wouldn't recommend it. I wouldn't want to shoot a deer with anything less than a 75 gr bullet, a frined of mine shot a doe with the 75 Amax at about 300yds. It worked fine, here is the recovered bullet.

My dream is to one day have an 8 twist 22-250 to shoot the heavies flat.

Re: rem 700 vs 22 250 questions

I don't have the exact rifle, but I've got a m700 in .22-250 ive had for years. I killed a lot of Texas critters with it including several whitetails. Based on my experience, I would say stay with the .308 for big bodied muleys. They don't chamber factory rifles with a fast enough twist to shoot some of the heavier bullets. The heaviest bullet I have shot accurately is the 63 grain Sierra soft point and it's not exactly aerodynamic. Most of my shooting is either 50 grain ballistic tips or 52 grain matchkings. Both are instant death on prairie dogs and other varmints. It's also a great medicine for coyotes.

Of the whitetails I've killed, all but one or two were head shots at 75 to 125 yards. The others were chest shots with a ballistic tip and it made a huge mess. On one, the off shoulder was completely destroyed and the other there was almost a dinner plate sized exit wound in the chest cavity.

I love my .22-250 but it's just not very good for big game.
