About two years ago one of my uncles friends who didnt shoot gave him a R600 in .308 that looked like absolute shit. my uncle had no use for it so he told me that if I fixed it up I could have it so needless to say I jumped on that opportunity. I should have taken before pictures because this thing looked like it was kept in the back of a pickup truck for 10 years and only taken out to beat with a crowbar. first thing I did was clean it and I think that was the very first time its ever been cleaned! after that I washed the muck off of it, sanded the shit out of it, then threw in a combo of staining it then steel wooling it. this was all last year and i forget what else I did to it but LOTS of hours were put into it.
the above was build up for me not wanting to part with this rifle but if it isnt a shooter im not gunna keep it, i havnt put much time into load devolopment for this rifle yet but the best groups ive been getting were maybe 5 inches.
all i know for this rifle is that it doesnt like heavy loads(I figured it wouldnt) last set of bullets I loaded used 168 grain acubonds starting with 39 grains of powder and working half a grain up every 5 bullets for 50 bullets. I didnt even shoot them all because the hotter loads were shooting bigger and bigger. the only reason I used the 168 grain was because I only used what we had for the 300 win mag (forgot to buy for the .308)
im planning on buying some 150 grain rounds and starting low, this is more of a bush gun and I would be very happy with 1MOA(not minute of pie plate) out of it and my question is does anybody else have one of these and if so how well does it shoot?

Re: Remington 600

You should probably bed the action into the stock. (many things online to show you how) Make sure the barrel is really clean and check the crown. If it sat around a long time, the crown could have rusted and gotten messed up.

Here's some good news. Barrels from Remington 700's and model 7's will fit the 600 action. Stocks for the model 7, XR-100 and XP-100 will fit your action. Also some 40X stocks will fit it, so you are not out of luck.

Make sure your scope mounts are installed properly and if you are shooting a scope that came with the gun, try another that you know is not possibly bad.

BTW we need pictures...

Re: Remington 600

Boyds also makes a stock in the OEM contour, but thankfully not the look. It's all walnut. You should be able to expect the same accuracy out of a 600 as you would out of a 700 or m70 of the same era. But it's also had no less than 40 years to get messed up. If it has irons try them, if it has mounts double check for tightness. You might also check to make sure the magazine box is properly seated and not pushing the action away from the stock via the floorplate.

Re: Remington 600

im not really looking to put too much money into this rifle because my pops is getting me a new rifle(either a .300 or a .270 which ever I decide)and im going to have to buy the scope for it. after that im planning on buying myself a .223 so my income is pre occupied right now haha. the guns actually in pretty good condition right now(except some undied parts of the wood are slowly popping up that ill fix this winter
I dont have a camera but my sister has a really nice dslr that ill use when I get the chance.
oh and i checked before and there was enough room between the stock and the barrel to fit a piece of paper in(just) so its barely freefloated
if brand new and in perfect condition how well could this shoot?

Re: Remington 600

shoots like a 70/700? thats pretty impressive, theres alot I dont like about this gun. its too short for me(like all remmys) im 6'5, it takes 3 hands and a dental pick to remove the bolt, with hotter loads the things a flamethrower, and im not too big on the short barrel. man I need longer guns, my other bush rifle is a winchester 94 30-30. and yes it has irons which seems to work pretty good at the gong

Re: Remington 600

If a regular remmy won't fit you this 600 must be a treat. The 600 filled the same role in the 60's and 70's that the model 7 does now. It's a carbine, if it's too short you can try a limbsaver. I think they run under or about 20 bucks. If you can't get an inexpensive fix to work like bedding, keep the gun. Later on you'll be glad you did. W94s are fantastic brush guns too so you've got a lot of redundancy there. Again if working up a load and or bedding the stock and tightening the action screws doesn't yield good results you can wait get it rebarreled not necessarily back to 308.

Re: Remington 600

I'll bet...if it looked like shit outside...so did the inside of the barrel. Sell it and get a newer Savage. And, being up there...get a Stainless. It won't shoot nor look like shit in 20 years. JMHO

Re: Remington 600

well besides selling it thats my plan, im getting a savage weather warrior(i think anyways, i havnt decided yet)for my graduation present. my uncle used to have one in a .338 and I really(ish, all his guns are better. mostly sakos and stuff) liked it.

Re: Remington 600

I have a few 600's and really like them. I'm 5'6" and they just fit me. My .243 shoots less than 1/2" groups and my .308 shoots less than an inch groups. Funny how the price of em has really increased since I bought em in the early 90's.

Rem 600 is an awesome little gun. I have been watching one at my local gun store and am really tempted to just go snag it. They are an incredible deer rifle for rough terrain where you don't want to carry a big rifle all day. And the .308's have a lot of punch in a compact package. Don't write it off!

It'll never be a tactical/precision rifle. Never be a 1000 yd gun. Never shoot 1/2 MOA. But for its intended use... hunting in rough/mountain terrain, it's a handy little piece for the woods.

Being in Canada... hard to sell to the US or I'd say "I'll take it." But if the barrel and action are good... they are just the thing for the North Woods. Keep it, carry it and get a precision rifle as well for the tight groups.

I think the 600 is very under-appreciated. Just my $0.02.

Cheers,

Sirhr.

Re: Remington 600

Stopped by the gun shop today and the 600 Mohawk .308 was still there. Store owner apparently wanted it gone, because it went home w. me for $400.

It's like new. Bore looks brilliant. Wood is ugly... but doesn't look to have been refinished. I think it was just what people were willing to put up with in the '70s. Now need some good rings and a good 1.5 - 6 and I have another deer rifle (like I needed another.) And I think I want a synthetic stock.

So not only do I advocate the 600's... I have one now.

Pix coming.

Cheers, Sirhr

Hunted with one of those in .243 for many years great little rifles.

Re: Remington 600

I have one with a 18" shilen heavy sporter contour and I bedded it into a hs precision stock (they sell this stock for the 600).I have a Score-Hi brake on it and it shoots in the 5s. It is a great rifle and is wearing a 1-4 Leupold. Possibly the handiest hunting rifle ever. I'm older than a lot of you and I remember these when they were new, Buck Rogers rib and all. The magazine box length limits bullet selection somewhat but try some 150 rn bullets you will be surprised. They don't have to jump so far to engage the rifling. Brian

Re: Remington 600

yeah the trigger guard is popping off a little between the screws, I just dont know if im willing to cough up 150$ for a trigger guard. all my money right now is going towards my viper for my new winney. its not popping out enough to be a problem at all but i still notice it

I was looking at this unit. http://www.gunbroker.com/Auction/ViewItem.aspx?Item=240437925

Found a Ramline Stock NOS for cheap and ordered it. Not HS precision... but for $70... I can't go too wrong.

Am thinking about a Trijicon scope.

Thanks for the tip on the RN bullets. Not something I'd have thought to load in a .308... but makes sense for this! I was going to tailor a load anyway.
