Quick question about upgrades, ok well im new here im a big fan of snipers and im a huge fan of the M40A1 MC sniper. But im new to getting out there and shooting and what not. But i have my grandfalthers remington model 715 bolt action rifle. And i would love to make it a gun i can go long range shooting with target practice at ranges like 400-800 yards on torso size targets. Its a remington 715 in 300 win mag takes 3 round long action mags and has a 24in barrel and also has a tasco pronghorn $30.00 scope on it sighted in to 100 yards. Now i would like to make a couple upgrades like a new scope such as the Bushnell Elite 4200 6-24x50mm Tactical Rifle Scope http://www.snipercentral.com/bushnell4200.phtml OR Weaver Tactical 3-15x50mm http://www.snipercentral.com/weavertact.phtml . And i got a little nervious watching the news thing about the remington 700 factory trigers so i would love to change my factory triger in for a remington x mark pro triger but im not sure if thats even possible. So i would like to no if the scopes are any good for what i want them for and if it is even possible to put a x mark pro trigger in my gun ? Re: remington model 715 upgrades ???

The only thing you can do with a Rem. 710/715/770 is shoot it until you want to throw it away. They have pressed in barrels so you can't change that. No one makes any other 'custom' stuff for it. Once that rifle is done, it's done. There is no fixing, modifying/upgrading it.

On the flip side, you could get either of the scopes you mentioned and have something to stick on your next rifle for a decent starter optic for them.

Re: remington model 715 upgrades ???

For starters, the rifle is $1225. The $0 you see in your list is it doesn't cost anything extra it's in the base price already. To me that's a little high for what you can get an already accurized Rem 700 in .308

Next, if you opted for the package I wouldn't spend the money on the barrel length upgrade or getting the end threaded for a brake. The Bushnell Elite is an okay buy, but still one your going to want to change out. Go with the basic scope on the package and spend that money on ammo.

All told, I've found a number of 700's with that type stock (of good quality) for around $800. If you take away the scope, rings and bases, that package comes out to around $200 more than you would pay if you shopped around and found an accurate rifle to start with (GA, GB or AA). But, if you want it now without having to guess what you'll need next, then it's a decent deal.

Re: remington model 715 upgrades ???

ok well something like this scope http://www.tasco.com/products/index.cfm?ClassID=13&FamilyID=166&ProductID=687 ? And well i would love some help. So these are my specs for my rifle... - it has to be a remington - it has to be a bolt action - it has to have a x-mark pro trigger - it has to have a blued barrel that is with in 20 to 24 inches long i would sugest 24 inches - it has to be a .308 win - it has to hold at least 4 rounds - And this gun is going to be an all purpose gun meaning it will be used for hunting deer, elk so it has to be reliable to go in any hunting conditions rain, snow, heat. And it will be used for long range shooting 400 - 800 yards so has to have desent scope. And it will be a lifetime gun. And my budget is $2000.

Re: remington model 715 upgrades ???

Those are reasonable requests, in that most come on bunch of stock Remington 700's. I just suggest that if you want to be taken seriously, take a week or so and look through all of the build threads, see what you like, check out the differences between stocks, the differences in glass. Aluminum bedding blocks, FFP vs SFP, Mildots, moa, triggers etc etc.

With $2k you can have a very nice shooter/hunter, but when you start your post with a link to a Walmart tasco scope, you will come off like a troll or just clueless.

If I were to pursue a such a rifle, I would get the GAP non-typical, or have a smith make one just like it.

Re: remington model 715 upgrades ???

First off, all of your questions are not uncommon.
After you have been here for a while and read through numerous threads, you will see that many "newbies" are in the same boat as you.

First off, this game costs money. Even a bare bones starter set up will run you about 1200 bucks (right at the cost of the sniper central kit)
I have priced the individual components that Mel uses, and he does save you some coin and it ships to you more or less zeroed.

You can put the same package together yourself over time.

Scopes: This is where folks that use the 60 dollar walmart tasco and bushnells run into problems.
A good scope costs money. Yes, there are budget scopes out there that perform very well. The cheapest tactical minded scope with a reticle that matches the adjustments is the Bushnell Elite 10X, that runs about 220 bucks.

If you wanted to put together your own rifle that RESEMBLED an M40A1, you could do so for about 1200. This is in no way meant to imply that it IS an M40A1, or is even Speced the same. The ONLY thing it will actually have in common with an issue rifle is the fact that it is a 700 action and .308. It will have a similar profile and it will be an attractive package to boot.

Install in this stock:
http://www.stockysstocks.com/servlet/the-553/bell-carlson-medalist-tactical/Detail

Add this scope:
http://swfa.com/SWFA-SS-10x42-Tactical-Riflescope-P53712.aspx

Use this hardware:
http://swfa.com/TPS-Mounting-Kit-for-Remington-700-Short-Action-P44682.aspx

Now, you can always elect to get a better scope. The Weaver 3-15 EMDR is damn near a steal at the price. But this would be an excellent entry level package that would look good and shoot good.

Re: remington model 715 upgrades ???

Thanks all you guys for the help and yes i sound like a noob because im a shotgun shooter mostly. And why i put up wal-mart scopes are because i look at these big scopes with turrets and i go hmmmmm how do you use this. But i no how to use one of the cheap scopes. And i guess it doesn't have to be a remington as long as it holds a group like a remington and it has the rest of the specs i asked for. But right now im looking into just a rifle so i would really like to figure this out first then the scope then ammo. Ok well haha im overwhelmed with all the rifle choices haha. i no i love the M40A1 http://www.gaprecision.net/mil-spec-rifles/m40a1.html ... But im have troubles picking a rifle because it is soo hard first of all picking one that has a x-mark pro trigger but that i still like. I was thinking about this though http://www.cheaperthandirt.com/product/2-REM84207 GOOD ? NOT GOOD ?
