I ended up with one of these for Christmas and have a few questions as I know nothing of the 308 platform.
What I do know is that AR10 and LR308 parts are not interchangeable.
From what I have read, DPMS makes this rifle for Remington. Correct?

Is this R25 a proprietary set up or can mods me made to the upper? i.e. thicker, shorter barrel and a differnt forend.

I would like to have a different upper config and need to know if I can modify the existing upper OR have a new upper built to my specs.

    Educate me please.

They are DPMS through and through (i.e. - LR-308). Therefore, if you want a different upper (complete or otherwise) any DPMS-pattern upper should run. Same is true for parts/components, etc. Additionally, many AR-15 parts are interchangeable with the LR-308 platform in both the uppers and lowers.

As for modifications...you can modify the R-25 upper to your liking just like an LR-308. Just be aware that at some point in time, DPMS changed the height of its receiver rails. This has ticked a whole lot of people off because it effects secondary purchases such as handguards (where they are intended to be monolithic or same-height rails with the upper like when mounting optics across the receiver and handguard, etc.). If you run a search n this issue before buying anything in the way of handguards/iron sights/etc., there are some pretty good visual reference to assist shooters in determining whether they have the older height or new height receiver so that they can select a handguard that will function appropriately with their rifle. I'm not sure whether the R-25's change at all and if they did, when they did, but its just one more thing to consider and figure out before you buy.

Thanks for that good info on the rails mating up...or not. I will research that.

What I am looking to do is rebarrel to a little larger diameter so I can suppress it (factory contour is too thin), shorten it by a couple inches and lighten up the handguard with possibly a PRI carbon.

Ive seen mention of the Noveske gas regulating block that some use when suppressing these rifles. Is it necessary or is it one of those things that you wont know you need it till you try it? If that is the case, I will get it when I rebarrel.
