Say you were given an action that has had some work done to it previously and you have decided to not trust the work and want to re-true the action. If the tenon thread was done oversize by .02 and is now 1.082x16, Can I go up another .02 when I true it up? I happen across some info on Stiller actions and the they offer the P1000 action in 1.350" dia(factory rem700) with a tenon of 1.115x18. He knows way more than I ever will so I am inclined to think its fine. I just have never seen mention of doing it when trueing up an action to a larger pitch diameter like I will need to do this one right.

thanks for any help.

Have you checked the work already done? This is what I would do.

First it would only take about 20 minutes to turn and thread a dummy tenon to check the work that has been done. Make the thread fit a slight interference fit. Screw the action on and check for runout inside the rear bridge. Next step loosen up the thread fit a bit and screw the action up against the shoulder, again check for runout. Next loosen the thread up even more, check runout and compare all the numbers.

Yes, there is runout in the work previously done. Not sure if it was hand tapped or what. In any event to true it up correctly I will need to go larger on the female thread in the action and then in turn I will make the tenon on the barrel to fit. My question is what is the risk of going a little larger? At 1.115 major dia it will still leave .1225" wall thickness on the action.

Going from 1.082 to 1.115 = .033 Thats quite a bit, I wouldn't think you would need to remove that much. .015-.020 should do just fine. I take all my R700 actions to 1.074, Haven't ran into any yet that needed more. But then again I do this for a hobby and don't do gobs of them like others. If your doing the work, make a couple plug gauges, one .001 under what your shooting for and the second for the exact threads you want. Or you can send it to any of the smiths here and have them do it.

Just my advice,
Kc

Savage has basically the same receiver diameter as a Remington and isn't the large tenon on a Savage 1.120"? Hoop stress decreases with an increase in tenon diameter and tenons will handle the stress of most cartridges even if there were no receiver ring around them. If they didn't we'd all be complaining about why our case extraction was so sticky, the very reason Savage went to the large tenon in the first place.
