I have a nice Remington 700VS in .308 that I have had for about 10 years now, always been a heck of a good gun, last weekend we were out shooting at 450yds and all of a sudden it wouldn't fire, come to find out the trigger was not resetting.
I took it apart and started playing with adjustments, got it to reset but now what was a nice 3.5# crisp trigger pull is long and gritty.

Am I SOL? do i need to get a new trigger or is there hope some where?

Re: Remington Trigger problem

Easy now Kevin, take a breath and relax. First, I hope you didn't lose the tiny little spring that is held captive by the spring weight screw. (The lower, front screw, which IMO is the only screw you should adjust on these triggers, in general...)

Presuming you have all the parts, all you need to do is hose the entire trigger assembly with brake cleaner or lighter fluid -- the kind that doesn't leave a residue.

Sounds like your trigger assembly is dirty, so clean it. Do NOT use lube or anything else on this assembly. Clean it, let it dry (use compressed air if you like), and try it.

If the trigger pull is too long now, it's because you've dicked with the depth of sear engagement and overtravel. The screws you should have left alone!!!

I agree the trigger is way out of adjustment from the sounds of it. Search the net the is a site that gives directions on adjustment. If you can't find it PM me.

Re: Remington Trigger problem

Ive adjusted several remington triggers in the past and got them all to be safe and reliable, with good trigger pulls, I consider myself competent on the matter of adjustments.
I have not touched this trigger up until this problem, I did not disassemble the trigger assembly itself, as I am not familiar with that, that's why I wanted to ask here, to see if that is a feat that is even worthwhile. I will do a good pressure clean on the trigger pack and see if that helps, this gun shoots sub half MOA for me with my handloads, and has shot prairie dogs out in south Dakota, and intend to take more game with it...just need to fix this little hick-up

Re: Remington Trigger problem

Well I got it fixed, I removed the trigger from the gun disassembled it, and sprayed the beezesus out of it with brake cleaner then reassembled.
I then followed the directions for trigger adjustment, It now has a consistent 3# trigger just like it used to and is crisp again.
Thanks for the help and the tip on cleaning, I would have not thought of that as I baby this gun and it doesn't really get dirty...but apparently that was the issue.
