Remingtons new SPS Tactical

Re: Remingtons new SPS Tactical

Pardon my ignorance, but wouldn't a 20" barrel limit the effective distance? Would the SPS Varmint with a 26" reach out further?

Very common debate. The velicity lost is much less than what you would think and the harmonics of the barrel are thought to be a little tighter with a shorter barrel. Lots of people reaching to far distances with a 20" barrel. Another point is that it's lighter and easier to handle. Again, very common debate if you search a little bit.

Re: Remingtons new SPS Tactical

Some people feel a 20 inch barrel limits you to 800 yards. Some people feel you can shoot to 1000 with a 12 inch barrel. Most police engagements are under 70 yards. For LE, it makes no sense to have more than a 16-20 inch barrel.

I've always preferred a longer barrel for the velocity, which if loaded for it can be significant. However, what you say here makes a ton of sense to get the shorter barrel if that is your need.

In fact, one day at our range, I ran across the MSP airport security team doing some training/testing. When they finished up I got to speak with the trainer and he told me that pretty much in most scenarios they wouldn't even fire out to 300. It would take a pretty extreme situation for them to fire at 600. Ever. Very different thinking going from Military precision shooting to LE precision shooting.

I have shot my cousin's SPS-T 308 out to a 1000 + a few yards no problem. They were handloads however but I'll be shooting mine out to 800+ with factory loads so we'll see how that goes.
