Most Savage bolts I have seen have an allen wrench socket in the rear to disassemble.... Just got in my new 10 Precision Carbine and it's not there.
frown.gif
Seems to be a shiny silver "button" back there instead. Have done a little searching but haven't found anything yet. Have a Kevin Rayhill handle on the way.... sure hope Savage hasn't changed it up where my new handle won't fit!!!

Oh.... and the barrel nut doesn't have the grooves so you can use one of their bbl wrenches to take off.... it's smooth all the way around!??!?!

Anyone have one of these or know how to disassemble?

Re: replacing bolt handle on Savage 10 PC ??

why in the hell would they do that ? i noticed that the bolt relese has been moved just in front of the trigger guard maybe they are trying to make them tamper proof but that was the allure of a savege to change out parts without a smith

I read this in a different post somewhere. You need to decock the firing pin. That shiny button on the end is now the cocking indicator. After you decock the firing pin, the silver button will move inward. Once that happends you can use your 1/4" allen to unscrew the back end. Also from what I have read, the bolts are all the same; no design or mounting differences from the previous bolts.

Hope that helps

I feel like an idiot now. LOL Oh well.... at least I got a laugh out of it. Thanks. Yes, once decocked the allen socket magically appears. Thanks!

Re: replacing bolt handle on Savage 10 PC ??

MrClean,
I just went through the "bolt handle thing" myself (on a new 10FLCP-K), mine was one of the threads referred to. I also felt pretty stupid to such an easy thing!

Yesterday I took my bolt handle off, put the setaline torch to it and bended the knob down just slightly. I like it much better than what it was. I've looked at one replacement bolt handle but just didn't like it, it was too thin looking.

Re: replacing bolt handle on Savage 10 PC ??

The new barrel nuts have a hole in them so you need a wrench that has a pin to fit. The factory guns barrel nut is oriented so you won't see it unless the action is out of the stock.

Re: replacing bolt handle on Savage 10 PC ??

Thanks everyone! My new bolt handle came in today. Although I like the look, it seems it will not follow the lines where it attaches to the bolt as smooth as the factory one. We'll see how I like the look / feel once it's on there.

Re: replacing bolt handle on Savage 10 PC ??

i just packed up a bolt handle to send back to the sellers for that reason. i liked the knob end of it, but the part that attached to the bolt was poorly designed. it had clearence issues as it rotated, plus the surfaces that make contact were made smaller and it just felt klunky as i cycled it. took it off the same night. my stock savage if way better feeling. i think having the new bolt knob welded/ threaded on the savage end would be better, but i have only tried one so far

Re: replacing bolt handle on Savage 10 PC ??

Holy Cow, this thing is horrible. Looks decent on the handle end. Doesn't match up smoothly with the lines on the bolt end like the factory one. I could deal with that. I have taken it off and put it on THREEE times now in hopes there was a bur or trash or something causing it to feel like this. Each time I replace with factory one and check too.

Factory bolt... smooth as glass, just a bit ugly with that big knob on the end of it.

Kevin Rayhill fancy schmancy bot... looks sleek and feels better.... until you actually bolt or unbolt it! My lord it is just as you described... clunky. And HARD to pop open or closed. I can't even close it down with just my thumb on top of the handle trying to push it down.
frown.gif
I am severely disappointed. I'm tempted to polish the shiny spots where I see it rubbing but you should have to do that!!! Plus I would think they would not take it back after I do that. Jeesh.... this sucks.

Re: replacing bolt handle on Savage 10 PC ??

Is what you are describing a Stockade bolt? I was almost going to buy one of those instead of the Sharp Shooter Supply bolt. So which one is better and can you show pictures of exactly what is wrong?

Thanks

Gene

Re: replacing bolt handle on Savage 10 PC ??

Don't know what I'd take a picture of exactly. It appears ok, but the action is just horribly way too tight and "clunky" feeling when working the action. Got it from Sharp Shooter Supply. They were extremely nice, I don't anticipate any problems but they are now gone to the shot show and won't be back until the 25th. Ugh!

Will be ordering one from Stockade along with the bolt lift kit on referral from another member here. Hopefully I will have better luck with that one.

Re: replacing bolt handle on Savage 10 PC ??

Wait a minute. In your previous post you said that you got the Kevin Rayhill bolt and that it felt tight and clunky. Kevin Rayhill is from Stockade. Now you say that you got the Sharp Shooter Supply bolt (saying the Sharp Shooter Supply version feels tight and clunky) and WILL now order the Stockade version. So which one do you have? If you took a picture then we would all know since the Stockade bolt and the Sharp Shooter Supply bolt do not look the same.

Re: replacing bolt handle on Savage 10 PC ??

Sorry for all the confusion.. I thought that they were all "Kevin Rayhill" handles and these were just two different companies that carried different styles of them. Again, sorry for confusion, I am learning the ropes here...

Here is a pic of the one I have issues with. It is one from Sharp Shooter Supply. I will probably just order the one from Stockade although I would rather not have the knurling on it. Anyone have any problems with the Stockade one??

Re: replacing bolt handle on Savage 10 PC ??

You definitely have a Sharp Shooter Supply bolt handle. Let us know after you get the Stockade version. If you could please take a picture so we can also compare the length of the bolt handles and also how it looks on the rifle. Also we are all very interested if the Stockade version has that clunky feeling you are getting with the Sharp Shooter Supply version.

Thanks in advance

Re: replacing bolt handle on Savage 10 PC ??

not to jump to far in but here is the one i have. well had, its getting sent back.

factory right, aftermarket left

cycled 10 times tops. same brand, different seller. waiting to see how much i can get for a refund, they have a restocking fee i didnt see. plus there was a bigger gap between the handle and the buffer. knob part of the handle was great, but the other end ruined the whole thing for me. i could not take it off fast enough...

Re: replacing bolt handle on Savage 10 PC ??

Buy another factory bolt handle, and then send it to AZPrecison for a new knob. I think maybe US Handgunner will install a new knob also for a Savage, not sure but couldn't hurt to ask. This way you keep the smoothness of the factory handle, and a customized knob made to your liking and specs.

Re: replacing bolt handle on Savage 10 PC ??

oh yeah. thats the only way to go. i can see re-doing the knob end, but why try to remake the other end? when i contacted the place i got mine from, they said of the 100's sold, only myself and one other person complained. Mr Clean, you know what it felt like, how could no one complain? i too wanted to take a file or a dremel to it, but waited to contact the company first. wow. bummed.

Re: replacing bolt handle on Savage 10 PC ??

That's the nature of the beast with a Savage Bolt handle... you have to Cycle them 100 times or so to Wear them in, does not matter which one you get it will feel tight in 75% of Installs until you wear it in... Shooting helps a Bunch.

Re: replacing bolt handle on Savage 10 PC ??

after cycling mine and polishing up a few of the contact points its alot better than it was when i first got it. under tips & tricks, use 600 paper http://www.steyrscout.org/savscout.htm but i liked the slimmer knob on the aftermarket handle, but the feel is terrible. how anyone can pay for that is beyond me.

<div class="ubbcode-block"><div class="ubbcode-header">Quote:</div><div class="ubbcode-body">That's the nature of the beast with a Savage Bolt handle</div></div> You mean when you replace it with an aftermarket? Because I have had four of these over the years and they were all (including this one) pretty damn smooth.

Anyway.... I did what I swore I wasn't going to do. Once again... fix something instead of sending it back. I really liked the look and feel so I took it apart put a little dychem blue on the handle and cycled it a few times.... found the "high" spots and have gently filed, then sanded, then buffed. Smooth as glass now.

You should NOT have to FIX something like this.. but I didn't want to wait till they returned from Shot Show... order another from Stockade, etc etc etc

Great pics above. That is exactly the main spot mine was rubbing and causing so much friction. Aside from the apparent rubbing at that location, to me, the angle on the SSS handle where it meets that collar ring is off. Factory handle is perfectly parallel but the aftermarket one seems a bit off. Just my .02, maybe that is part of the problem.

So tomorrow she goes to the smith to get the bbl threaded.... then Duracoated and then I can finally put the glass on top and go shoot!!! Wooooohoo!!!

double ditto on that. i had to fight off the urge to take a file to it. i agree with the angle being off where the bolt handle meets the buffer. plus they reduced the surface areas that are needed for the two parts to make contact and work off eachother.

so did you have to paint it again too? i am tempted to just do what you did, but id have to get some money for correctly re-engineering the thing to work properly. why they didnt copy savages casting and just redesign the handle part and be done with it?

Re: replacing bolt handle on Savage 10 PC ??

Here is a pic of mine its a factory small knob with a tac ops bolt knob kit...........
IMG_0254.jpg
[
IMG_0253.jpg

its a nice kit from tac ops i silver soldered it on. it was pretty easy can give details if any one would like. On another note if you do the bolt lift bearing some material has to come off the allen head bolt. a .357 0r 38 case with a 5/32 bearing epoxied in does the trick also............. if this is old news and you already know then disregard

Re: replacing bolt handle on Savage 10 PC ??

not bad, but you need to step back and zoom more. your camera is focusing way farther than your object. did you have to dremel the stock knob off to get it to fit the handle? im really leaning towards having one of the guys on the site lengthen and put a smaller teardrop knob on it. either that or i contact a guy i know that has a foundry...

Re: replacing bolt handle on Savage 10 PC ??

If you guys want a aftermaket bolt handle that matches the lines really well do a google search for jb weaponary.I have one on my savage and it is very nice......

Re: replacing bolt handle on Savage 10 PC ??

i bought my barrel from him. nice stuff. az precision and us handgunner are site sponsors, so ill throw in a plug for either of them. they both offer a good selection of knobs and i think they both do savage now.

i hope i got your names right guys

I think we could have done a smooth transition to the bolt knob that would have looked a lot better. We also have 6 knob designs to choose from or you could have specified your own knob. Maybe it is just the camera...I hate to be critical but that just looks like it would be uncomfortable with that lip on the bolt knob.

Check this thread for details... http://snipershide.com/forum/ubbthreads.php?ubb=showflat&Number=1281511#Post1281511

Re: replacing bolt handle on Savage 10 PC ??

Axeman,
After getting it back from the bbl being threaded, it will be totally stripped and DuraCoated. Combat Black for accent parts and internals with the SL formula.... and their tactical ultra flat OD green for rec and bbl. Not sure about site base, rings and scope yet. Probably do the base black, rings OD Green and leave the scope the matte black it came from factory with. Should look decent with that digital green camo AccuStock.

Re: replacing bolt handle on Savage 10 PC ??

that will look nice. i like the stock, those colors should be nice on the rifle. just basic black is all i can think about so far, lol. im glad you got the handle to work. i sent my seller pics so i could get the definate word on my refund. im not gonna send it all the way back and have them say 50% refund due to the paint scrapes. as far as painting my rifle, ive seen alot of nice stuff on here, lotsa talented guys doing camo. but the only one i really liked enough to consider on mine was this one...

Re: replacing bolt handle on Savage 10 PC ??

Yea... have seen a few of the camo-skull ones. I love those things. I may have to try my hand at it.... I have a couple of Iwata airbrushes and I use to paint motorcycles, so I could bust out the templates and give it a try. Those are some fine examples of airbrush work and I fear mine would fall short. The stock came in that digital camo (which I am not really a fan of) so it will inevitably get painted I am sure. A black and OD green skull-camo would look good probably. Probably a task in my future once I get the rest done. lol

Anyone following this thread...

I am now looking for a good muzzle brake. Was going to get a thread protector made and maybe for a little more I can just get a good brake? Or are they even worth fooling with.... should I just put a thread protector on it when the can isn't on there?

Re: replacing bolt handle on Savage 10 PC ??

there is a guy here that makes nice looking ones. several guys that can bob your barrel and make nice protectors. i have pictures, but i keep forgetting to change the name of the picture to the name of the smith that made the part/ did the mod, i have no idea who to tell you about. why not have all three? i know brakes make the guy next to you not love life. if your at a crowded range, lose the brake. its an option.

Re: replacing bolt handle on Savage 10 PC ??

Just out of curiosity (seemed to have gotten a bit off topic) after you "re-worked" the bolt, how did it handle? Did that fix all the problems?

I really like the looks of that bolt. And the price.

I was also looking at the ones from www.tacticalworks.com. Does anyone have any experience with those?

Re: replacing bolt handle on Savage 10 PC ??

You can send me your factory handle, or the whole bolt.

I can install and refinish any of my knob on to that handle.

I cut off the factory knob about half way down the handle, and install one of my studs, and the knob screws onto that before I blend it in. Look seamless.

If that one pictured above is sent in, I can make it look good.

The one above was made from a Sharp Shooter Supply bolt handle, it makes for a nicer look than a modified factory handle, I don't think there was any issue with smoothe function, but that I'm sure Mike addressed that during the build.

Re: replacing bolt handle on Savage 10 PC ??

I guess that would be my fault. I'm new here, and since there's a 100 post quota I figure I might as well put my .02 wherever I can. lol

Please don't hate me.

Re: replacing bolt handle on Savage 10 PC ??

Well, let me see. 19 months between posts? Yup, thats a dead thread come back to life!

Grab your AKs boys! The undead invasion has begun!!!

But, seriously, it doesn't matter. This is what the internet is for (and porn). The guys, and girls here are top notch for helping out and bouncing ideas off of.

Oh, BTW, mentioning the 100 post "quota" may be in bad taste. Then it sounds like you're just here to hock your shit in the classifieds. Head for the Bear Pit to bump up your post numbers. JMHO

Re: replacing bolt handle on Savage 10 PC ??

Ah... Thanks for the tip.

But I'm not here to sell anything. Just to sponge all the knowledge I can. lol And maybe someday be able to give a little back.

I read this in a different post somewhere. You need to decock the firing pin. That shiny button on the end is now the cocking indicator. Gene </div></div>

Thought I'd resurrect the thread once again. Can the bolt be decocked by hand after it is removed from the action? Are there any tricks to this?

Excuse my ignorance but is it just that simple?

Re: replacing bolt handle on Savage 10 PC ??

In front of the bolt handle is what looks like a button in a triangular cut out. Just push the button toward the longer end and it will decock the bolt. But you'll have to push it back to the ledge to reinstall the bolt.

Re: replacing bolt handle on Savage 10 PC ??

Wow I feel like a dumbass now. Thanks for the answer.
