So I'm getting ready to get. A new scope. In the running is a NSX 5.5-22 mil/mil SFP or waiting on the new votex pst mil/mil FFP. My question is if I'm looking for a scope that can handle fclass, tactical and posibly hunting which way do I want to go. FFP or SFP. My concern is with FFP as the reticle gets larger does the target begin to become overly obscured my the reticle. I'm assuming haveing not used a FFP before having the reticle getting larger makes it easier to range UKD targets. Any advice would be helpful.

Re: FFP vs SFP for different types of shooting

I do hold for wind. But I would like to beable to hold for elevation as I get into unknown distance target shooting.

Re: FFP vs SFP for different types of shooting

for hunting and f-class you really dont need a ffp scope, and your current nsx would be a great scope for that.

like anohter user stated, what are you going to do more of.

i would run you nsx for the time being, get out shoot alot, shoot some matches, then make that decision.

I ran a 22x nsx moa/moa for many years it was my first big scope purchase great optic, i shot a few matches with it and had no issues ranging targets at expended ranges, for me at the time it was the best i could afford and it worked great

Re: FFP vs SFP for different types of shooting

The nsx is really the way I'm leaning. Budget is tight and like every poor shlub I'm trying to make 1 tool do the work of two. So I'm really looking for the best compromise. The new SSHD was in the running as well but I'm not sure I want to limit myself to a fixed piece of glass, I guess I'm part of the over scoped generation. NSX 5.5-22x56 mil/mil with MLR for $1400...good price??

Re: FFP vs SFP for different types of shooting

Most of what ill do is bench and fclass. But that's simply because right now those are the competitions near by right now and practical shooting seems like the way to go.

Re: FFP vs SFP for different types of shooting

FClass, Tactical and Hunting, with the same scope and same rifle?

Apples, oranges and coconuts.

The ideal FClass requires high magnification (up to 42x), small adjustments (1/8"), and a fine reticle. Thinking the Nightforce 8-32x or 12-42x. FFP and MIL adjustments, are not necessarily required for success.

For Tactical Shooting, FFP rules for UNK targets, scopes powers over 24x are of marginal use, and the reticle should match the turrets (either MIL/MIL or MOA/MOA). Fine turret adjustments are not required in this discipline, so 1/4", 0.36, or even 1/2" adjustments are preferred.

Hunting on the other hand covers such a wide variety of game and ranges, that it is impossible without knowing the species.

However, other than maybe varmints are long range, I cannot think of species that would be suitable to hunt with an fclass scope.

But in my view, the most important attribute a hunting scope can have, besides ruggedness and repeatability (which all scopes need BTW), is the ability to see the reticle in all light conditions encountered. So heavy crosshairs and/or lighted reticles tend to be favored, and very fine reticles avoided.

If one had to choose only one scope, for all three disciplines, then serious compromises would have to be made. I suppose that a 5-25x scope like S&B or Premier, or even a 5x22 like Nightforce might do in a pinch.....

But it is far better to have two or three rifles to cover the bases properly.

IMHO and YMMV

Re: FFP vs SFP for different types of shooting

Sounds like a SFP will do what you need.

Just make sure you know what mag you are on when you hold.

I actually am down to one rifle...multiple calibers...multiple disiplines. I have found that a FFP scope is really not to much of a handicap for F-Class type stuff, and a huge advantage in others. But, YMMV

Re: FFP vs SFP for different types of shooting

I would certainly love to have multiple rigs for different disciplines. Unfortunately its not in the cards. $1400 for the NXS is that a good price right now?

Maybe I missed it in this thread, where can I get that scope for $1400?

Re: FFP vs SFP for different types of shooting

Something to keep in mind about the PST FFP's, the 6-24 has a finer reticle than the 4-16 (.04 vs. .06 Mrad). In the 6-24 it's still thicker than you might want for F-class but it's much finer than many FFP scopes. For the hunting, etc, I prefer the FFP so it may be a good compromise.
