Re: FFP vs SFP for different types of shooting
FClass, Tactical and Hunting, with the same scope and same rifle?
Apples, oranges and coconuts.
The ideal FClass requires high magnification (up to 42x), small adjustments (1/8"), and a fine reticle. Thinking the Nightforce 8-32x or 12-42x. FFP and MIL adjustments, are not necessarily required for success.
For Tactical Shooting, FFP rules for UNK targets, scopes powers over 24x are of marginal use, and the reticle should match the turrets (either MIL/MIL or MOA/MOA). Fine turret adjustments are not required in this discipline, so 1/4", 0.36, or even 1/2" adjustments are preferred.
Hunting on the other hand covers such a wide variety of game and ranges, that it is impossible without knowing the species.
However, other than maybe varmints are long range, I cannot think of species that would be suitable to hunt with an fclass scope.
But in my view, the most important attribute a hunting scope can have, besides ruggedness and repeatability (which all scopes need BTW), is the ability to see the reticle in all light conditions encountered. So heavy crosshairs and/or lighted reticles tend to be favored, and very fine reticles avoided.
If one had to choose only one scope, for all three disciplines, then serious compromises would have to be made. I suppose that a 5-25x scope like S&B or Premier, or even a 5x22 like Nightforce might do in a pinch.....
But it is far better to have two or three rifles to cover the bases properly.
IMHO and YMMV
