I recently got bit by the S&W bug, again. I have a 686-6 shot, and have a crush on the 627 PC 8 shot. Anyway, I don't have a cool grand to play with, so I don't own one yet. Yesterday I found a Smith Hunter with an unfluted cylinder in 41 Mag for $650 and was tempted. Had it been 44 Mag or 357 Mag I would have bought it. Do you guys think it's worth it, or should I hold out and get the 627?

Re: Revolver question

reputed to shoot straighter/flatter than.44mag, punching more than.357_not-so-common_ buy it (and you can even sell your 686,because you will have the best of both worlds)_

Re: Revolver question

Not going to shoot better than a .44 mag. That's not even an argument. More horse than a .357 for sure, but you can't run .38s in it. Both the .357 and the .44 have many times more choices in factory ammo, hand-loading options in bullet type and size, and mounds more research into getting them to shoot well.

Hold out for what you want. My buddy has an 8-shot Smith. I thought I wanted one until he got his. It's a fine revolver but didn't turn my crank. I'm very happy with the 625jm I bought instead. The 625 is a very accurate pistol as well.

Re: Revolver question

stay away from the 41 mag. not that it is a bad round , its a pain to get components for. I dont think 650 is a great deal anyway. look around and you can and will find a 44 for around the same price + - .

as far as the 8 shot make sure to get the steel frame if you do. one word of caution it will eat ammunition faster than a herd of rascal riders at golden coral buffet.

Re: Revolver question

I'm agreeing with Matthias. The people who own the 41 Mag defend it to the "hilt." (And I don't know what the heck a "hilt" is anyway.) But...you have to figure if you just spent $650 or more on a revolver....are you gonna call it a POS?

Get a caliber that gives you choices. I have 2 Smiths in 44 mag. a 629 DX Classic that I have scoped, and a PC M-29 unfluted cylinder. I reload for 'em and they are great revolvers.

FWIW

Re: Revolver question

I'm just trying to avoid saying something about Muzz, "hilt," and buttsecks in the same sentence.
