I just recently bought a savage 110 30-06 and was wondering some good durable rifle scope options. I am debating on what nikon scope to get. I want mildot but i also want side focus if necessary. my choices are nikon 8408 2.5-10x42mm with mildot and no sf and nikon 8423 4-16x42mm with sf and mildot. it will be a hybrid hunting and target rifle.

Re: Rifle scope debate (need Help)

Monarchs are not bad scopes: I've used three of them so far and they have all held a zero and tracked well to 12MOA. I have no first hand information about their durability, though.

I would be leery of high magnification numbers on less expensive scopes, meaning that I would want to look through them first to make sure that the image and clarity are useable at maximum power.

For decent but inexpensive mounts, have a look at Talley.

Im use to the leupold on the m24 i trained on so it would be a big difference. but from what i see nikon has a good reputation on their buck master series.

I've had multiples of both and actually prefer the non-HD models.

If only they came with mil knobs.

I could replace it and put a NF on my AR, but there's really no need.

Re: Rifle scope debate (need Help)

The Monarch is a fine scope; I had a 5-20x44 with Nikoplex and side focus, and while it wasn't "bad-ass glass" it did what I needed it to do very well.

I also think the Buckmaster 4.5-14 or 6-18 are good options for your stated purpose at a lower price point.

Re: Rifle scope debate (need Help)

I've got one of the Buckmaster / mildot / sidefocus / 4.5 - 14x 40 on a Savage .223. Works great. Image is still clear at max power. No problems up to this point. I think I paid around $200 for it from the SWFA Sample List. I could be wrong. Year or two ago. Wasn't much more than that if I am.

Re: Rifle scope debate (need Help)

is side focus necessary with a 2.5-10x42mm? on another note I have a millet buck gold 6-25x56mm that i got for christmas one year and put it on my 260 and that scope can take a beating like no other from dropping to throwing it in the back of a pick up without zero shift and I have never had a problem with it and i have taken shots out to 1500 yards with it and 800yard ground hog shots. Plus i like the locking turrets too. Id just say not to under estimate the millet scopes ether.

Re: Rifle scope debate (need Help)

For that price range, and hunting/varmint use that you describe, you may want to check our Shepard on their site. They have an interesting system, although it isn't a mildot reticle. It is hunting BDC reticle. Very durable in my experience. Just a thought.
