Im looking to build a 30cal. rifle/can combo. Im considering a T/C Contender in 300 whisper. Also a Mini-Mauser action in the same caliber or even a 7.62x39 chambering. Kinda leaning away from the 308 Win. because of case capacity and also size of rifle/weight of same. Any suggestions? Singleshot is not a problem, but also what do you suggest for a can? I have a YHM Wraith for a 22lr now and I love the thing. Its the QD version so I will greatly appreciate all of you all's experiences. Thanks in advance.

Re: rifle/suppressor suggestions

If you're okay with threaded suppressors I've heard good things about the Gemtech Sandstorm, low weight and quiet.

Rifle in 7.62x39 will weigh the same as 308, not sure how you'd change that. There are good powders now days to make subsonic loads in 308 and fill the entire case, brass is everywhere and you can shoot bigger stuff as needed. I'd go 308 if it were me.

Re: rifle/suppressor suggestions

I use both the Whisper and Suppressed 308... the Whisper is a real fun round to play with. It was developed specifically for sub usage and you can send everything fron 110's to 250's downrange.
I too like the 308 for sub use. I use both 1:12 and 1:10 rifles with trailboss powder (it eliminates concern on case capacity).

Ive built 2 Whispers on Savage actions (both sold) and currently use an SBR'd Contender with a 10" 1:8 barrel. Quiet !!!
If I do another it will be on a CZ527 action...

I'd like to hear some of your recipes for .308 in 1:12" twist. What can are you using? I know some have smaller bores to reduce sound but increase chance of a wobbly bullet striking a baffle or the end cap.

Where do you get the 250 grain bullets? The heaviest I can find are 240 grain.

Dusty...

On the 1:12 I use 10 grns of Trailboss with 150rn.. dropped to 9.6 grains without issue in my Steyr SSG. Waiting on my Remington LTR to come back from Tornado Technologies (4 effin months)being threaded to try and replicate. I also tried to 8.2 grains of Unique w/ 170grn 30/30 bullets. (very good load)
I prefer the 1:10 twist on my Sig, 20" barrel and could see a 1:8 custom in my future.
Using an AWC Thundertrap which has a real tight clearance causes me to be real careful...

Re: rifle/suppressor suggestions

I prefer using a 308 over a 300 whisper. I had a whisper a while back ,but once I figured out I could just load subsonic 308 the whisper just sat in the safe so I sold it. I now have a pretty much dedicated 308 subsonic gun.It is a savage 12 bvss that I have shortened, threaded, and restocked.I chose the savage for the 1/10 twist. I generally use 180 RN,9.8 trailboss(which fills the case about 75% or so).I dont ream the flash hole as I have seen no need to and I use standard large rifle primers.I have also used 190smk with great results.

Re: rifle/suppressor suggestions

As far as cans go there are a lot of nice 308 cans on the market today. As long as you stay with a proven company you should be pretty happy. Also I have heard nothing but good things about SAS.
