I made the decision to switch from a CZ 457 to a 700 footprint action. I know a custom CZ can be just as accurate so it's just personal preference to switch. I am stuck in between a MPA build, RimX with ModX from Modacam or Rachel Precision or the newer L3I Stinger barreled action. A 4th option is a used Vudoo V22 G2 action which I would end up rebarreling. I also know rimfire actions can be finicky so reliability will be mainly based on me setting up correctly. Price is not an issue and I'm not bringing chassis/stocks into the equation right now. It will be used for PRS. Any advice or guidance would be appreciated.

Cant go wrong with a Rachel Precision build. Mr. Randy is a great guy and works on all of mine.

For PRS the rem 700 platform is nice. I shoot with guys who have all of those you listed. I have seen a ModX and a standard Rimx choke up. Not sure what the issue was on it that day. With Rimx and prob that modx, mag adjustment is the key. If i have a feeding issue it is my fault. Or my mag is out of adjustment somehow.

I have 3 rimxs 2 by RR and one by DI(prefit). My stinger just shipped so i hope to be able to report on it soon.

For what you listed, i would reach out to a quality Smith. Everyone has their own, i have used Rachel Precison, DI, Heavy Precison, and a Manzella barrel. All were great to work with. I would prob look at a 24”-25” 1.20 or 1.25 Brux, Ace or CRB on a rimx. When you pick up an extra mag get an alta arms mag and call it a day.

Shoot both a RimX and Vudoo 360 for PRS/NRL.
Both are lasers! But the Vudoo is always reliable, whereas the Rimx can have its moments with feeding and ejection. I’ve tried it all with that thing, and the ghosts still pop up from match to match.
Currently waiting for MCR to open up services for the ModX conversion. That said, I have more W’s with the Rimx and prefer a 90* bolt throw… Something about the feel just warms the heart.

If I had to choose one…. It would be the RimX, but Modx’ed, which I’m hoping to have done in the next couple months.

I have seen a modx choke too. So much so it couldn’t finish but I never asked what happened. Dude was pissed. I suspect the mags. I had 1 issue with mine and it was right when I got it on mag height. I have since played with the mags and got our club expert to help and that cleared it up.

With Rimx you have to understand there can always be tinkering. We had one guy switch to eley and his Rimx wouldn’t run until he got the special eley extractor but we have 10 other guys who have never had a problem. It takes some tweaking.

Please post up your thoughts on the Li3 when you get some rounds through it I am very curious to hear some thoughts/reviews.

I have owned 5 vudoos, 2-3 B14R's, couple of Kidd 10/22s, 2(currently)RimX, I love the RimX for the easy barrel swaps and that you can get prefits, but that in itself is a problem because I have 5 or 6 barrels all from Mike at Manzella, 3 ACE, 2 bartlein and a 13T muller, I think 2 are 20", 1 22", 1 24" and 1 25" and they all shoot...the reason I have all of these is testing the different lengths/brands.

As far as velocities go I personally do not see any big differences from a 20" barrel to a 25" barrel, as far as twist rates go I do think the 13T Muller is a bit more accurate out past a 100yds, as far as brand, I do not see a big difference they all have their favorite ammo but again my choice if I could only have 1 would be a Muller.

Of all these 22s I have owned there are only 2 that I can truly say I regret selling, the 25" 13T Muller DI Precision Vudoo, and the 16T 25' Krieger Modacam Vudoo.

The one I am really interested and can not wait to get my hands on is Kenny's(Desert Precision)new barreled action, also waiting for Mike Bush to come out with his new action and also very interested in the Li3 just waiting for more reviews.

Right now I think the L3i is very interesting but it’s so new that it’s hard to jump straight in. Not to say they don’t know their way around a 22 though. They’ve been doing a great job with parts/ accessories for a while. So they’ve seen what works and what doesn’t. I’m tempted to get one to replace my son’s 457, but they haven’t released their lefty version for me yet.

Things will get really interesting when Mike and Kenny launch their new actions.

If I needed one right now, I think I’d go with MPA with a 26” barrel so it balances better

If I "needed" a barreled action I'd go Li3, I have an Elite(MPA)action with Dave Lott right now, I bought this MPA 26" Vudoo used and after putting 500 rounds through it I shot 7 different ammos through it that showed no promise so off came the barrel. I am in no way knocking MPA as I have had several of their rifles and all were hammers but this particular barrel just did not show any promise.

Like you say things are going to be real interesting in the Rimfire world end of this year into "26"!

Understood. I’ve done my share of tinkering…..

Thank you all for the feedback. What is keeping me from buying a RimX right now is that question about reliability even with the ModX. I spoke to someone that went to nationals and they mentioned there was at least one person that had issues with the ModX but it could had just been the environment. I would also consider waiting for Kenny's new action or the other two mentioned but since everyone is waiting for them, I doubt I would be able to get one in time for next season. For those that are running 90° bolts and 60°, is it all personal preference or does the shorter throw gain you some time during stages?

I can only speak to Vudoo (especially gen-1) and unmodified Rim-X. I have zero experience with any of the other actions... but with that said, I suppose a dedicated tinkerer might enjoy messing with the lesser-known actions... not me. At this point in my life, I want something proven*.
  • I have not had a feeding malfunction in my first-gen Vudoo in literally years and many thousands of rounds of Lapua and SK ammo fed from 10-round polymer and (discontinued) 15-round magazines.
    • I did have feeding issues when I first got the rifle in 2019. Problem was the MPA BA Comp chassis did not hold the magazine quite high enough. Solution was installation of the now-standard adjustable magazine latch.
    • I moved the barreled action to a Manners MCS-TCS stock a few weeks ago - a very different look and feel, and no adjustable mag latch. I only have a few hundred rounds through it since the switch, but so far reliability has been 100%.
    • I do know other Vudoo owners who have experienced feeding issues with a specific copy of "Stock Brand A" and perfect reliability with another copy of the exact same stock. Ideally, I would prefer a stock or chassis with an adjustable latch.
  • I owned a Rim-X for over two years. Competed with it a little in the first year. Then it mainly lived in the safe because I liked - and trusted - my Vudoo more.
    • The Rim-X fed more smoothly than the Vudoo... until it didn't. It's a known design thing that Rim-X MUST feed from a magazine; it cannot be single-loaded into the chamber. If a round pops off the mag too early, the rim ends up in front of the flat extractor claw and all too often the cartridge is pushed into the chamber - where it has to be pried out with a sool of some sort or pushed out with a rod.
    • In my case and in the case of another Rim-X owner I just talked to yesterday, misfeeds happen most frequently when the Zermatt 5-round extension is in place. The extension does not ship with a stronger spring; insufficient spring force seems to be the root cause.
    • While I have personally met and worked with Jonathan at Modacam, I have to say it puzzles me why anyone would buy a Rim-X and then try to make it work like a Vudoo (Mod-X)...
    • I sold my Rim-X to a gentleman who loves it. I see him regularly; the rifle's doing well for him.
With all that said, there is no way on God's green earth I would deal with whatever "Vudoo" is at this point in time. I don't even want to wear my Team Vudoo shirt to matches anymore, lest a newbie think the company is what it was 2017-2022 or so. And then Zermatt screwed the pooch with whatever went wrong with Rim-X actions whose locking lugs galled within a couple hundred rounds (which, given the apparent lack of ongoing uproar, must be resolved).

So what is OP to do? Based ONLY on my personal knowledge and opinion, I would suggest buying a used Vudoo or RimX (avoiding the serial range where the soft lugs were an issue, although I would expect Zermatt to fix one that was dumped onto an unsuspecting buyer). For Vudoo, I would go with gen-1 or gen-2).

I have centerfires with both 60- and 90-degree bolt. The difference is inconsequential to me. I know of no real advantage one over the other for competition. Comes down to preference.

All preference… but..
I will say that when I was running the Kahles K540i, the 60* throw allowed more operating room between the bolt handle and massive ocular…

I’ve since switched to a March PRS…

Currently own a number of .22lr rifles but for competition purposes I have 3 rifles. CZ 457 MTR, RimX, and a Vudoo 360.

The CZ MTR is an amazing rifle right out the box. With SK ammo and Center X ammo, the rifle out shoots me. Super reliable. Feeds and extracts every time. Not the smoothest action but its getting better with use.

The RimX is a a beast. The action is smooth as glass. Built it with a PVA barrel thats hammers with Eley Tenex and Lapua Center X. Not too shabby with SK ammo as well. The mag height is dialed in making each round feed reliably. I have not experienced any push feed issues or feeding issues like some people have. Again, the rifle way out shoots me. I will be doing the Modcam mod and buying an extra bolt so I can still get prefits if desired.

The Vudoo 360 I have is also a beast. The bolt is probably the smoothest of the 3 comp rifles. Its a tac driver with Lapua Center X. I have also had great results with SK ammo. The mag catch is adjusted perfectly so that the mags sit and feed reliably every time. No feeding or extraction issues other than 2 times (user error) where I failed to open the bolt with enough pressure. Like the RimX, the Vudoo out shoots me. Many of the top shooters run a Vudoo.

I am currently running the CZ MTR in competitions, only because I am still fairly new to the sport and learning. Once I am more proficient as a shooter, I will move on to compete using the other two platforms without hesitation rotating them as I see fit.

Whats next? I would like to build out a CZ 457 from Desert Precision. I just really like the platform. That or the new Genesis that Kenny will be releasing.

My 2-cents...

Sold my vudoo due to reliability issues. IMO the mags kinda suck. But mike is fixing to release his new ones. My rimx has been way more reliable. I use the rimx 15rd mags most of the time. My new ModX had some shaving issues at first. But I think I’ve got that worked out now.

What types of issues were you having with the Vudoo? Also, are you happy with the ModX? What was the cost & turnaround time?

You should just move into the other platforms sooner than later dude!
Rip the band aid off and send it !
