Not entirely bright all around. It used to be common practice for PA DLEOs to destroy dogs running at large.
Family dog shot and killed by member of nearby rifle range
Man who shot dog said he mistook it for a coyote

I always thought of Tucker as more of an Australian Shepherd...

You would think, huh.Takes a special kind of stupid.
A coyote looks nothing like a German Shepherd.

Then there are the idiots that are at a shooting range and just cannot resist shooting at a live animal they see, because...they are idiots.
No you won’t. I’ve been telling him for months that you’re the brains behind our operation! ?I’m gunna miss you, buddy.

In SC DNR encourages deer hunters to take coyotes when deer hunting. They say coyotes are detrimental to the deer population, but at the same time they will issues hundreds if not thousands of depredation tags to farmers where they can just shoot deer anytime day or night and just leave them where they shoot them. I still can't figure that one out.
Wellll, yes and no. Not that it excuses this action in any way, or makes it any less stupid, but the article DOES say he was a “German Sheperd-mix” (ie not a purebred). Here’s a “German Shepherd-mix” that came through a few months ago that I think could quite easily be mistaken for Wile E.:

I didn't say "I" couldn't identify him, but if he were my dog I'd sure be worried someone else might not could. (And I disagree with not-even-close. The other half you can't see had a bushy tail similar to a coyote). In person, this dog resembled a coyote. At 150 yards with an inexperienced "hunter," it would get shot.
There are no excuses for shooting a dog, because you thought it was a coyote.
Agreed. Off-topic, but have you hunted them at night with FLIR? Things get a lot less certain, and you have to be really sure of what you're doing.

I shoot on a military installation. Years back a guy killed a rattler on the range and talked about it to the wrong people. Federal charges.

We have all sorts of wildlife crossing the range. Buddy Bear will step out in the middle of a match and walk in front of the targets. Everyone stops and waits until he ambles by.
