I just picked up a DPMS SASS (1st gen) and today was its first test drive. I can tell I need some higher rings already, however I am more concerned about a couple FTFs I had today.

The ammo I was using was nothing special. Remy UMC (Wal-Mart) 150 grain FMJ. My rate of fire was slow, and still it failed to get the spent case out of way before the action came forward. This resulted in a traffic jam that I had to clear about 4 times out of 25 rounds.

When I bought the gun I cleaned and lubed it. The cases that ejected cleanly went forward at about a 45 degree angle and landed about 3 to 4 feet from the action. Any ideas about how I can fix this?

Re: SASS FTF/FTE

I hate UMC. And I think you will to. UMC has always been under powered. Their pistol ammo won't run in sub guns. Which I can understand for most people won't matter, but it makes a difference. I've had issues with FTE on their .223, which again would be to being underpowered. I haven't shot any of their .308, but that's only because I learned my lesson with the 9mm, .45, and .223. If three out of three are under powered, I'd guess the 4th would as well. Try some different ammo, see how it goes.

Re: SASS FTF/FTE

Are you running the bolt dry or wet? I have had nothing but issues with my r25, except with umc ammo. I was using mostly american Eagle. But even my handloads had issues. I did a couple things but now I am running the bolt wet all my issues have disappeard.

Re: SASS FTF/FTE

I took it over to my gunsmith and we checked it out. First of all inside the bolt was full of carbon. I cleaned and lubed the entire bolt inside and out.

While we were looking it over I had him look at the hammer spring. I remembered the guy I bought it from had said that he had 'upgraded it.' Turns out the upgrade was a much lighter AR15 spring (yellow) from JP. My guy thinks that the spring wasn't driving the firing pin to make solid contact and thus causing a host of issues, including FTEs.

I think I will try some different ammo and my new standard spring out and see what happens.

Re: SASS FTF/FTE

I just went to JP Enterprises and read the information they have on their reduced power springs. And I quote "Do not use this spring kit for any defense or duty applications or any AR-10 type rifle<."

Some people just can't read the instructions I guess.
