My interests in shooting have been steadily evolving from handguns to rifles during the last year and I decided to start with .22LR first to work on the fundamentals before jumping-in to centerfire headfirst. Maybe I'll be ready to step-up to a centerfire precision rifle in the next 6 months, maybe not, but I've started casually looking at what's out there and figuring-out how much gun and optic I can get for about a $3k budget.

A couple of rifles that have recently caught my attention are the Sauer 100 Pantera and the Sako S20 in 6.5 PRC. Is anyone shooting either one and if so, what do you think? Would you recommend it? Thanks in advance.

Seeing you're in the US you have a plethora of choices and those would be so far from the top. So so far.

I assume you're doing general target shooting and maybe you'll dabble in competitions

    Build a custom

Zermatt Origin (Can easily swap from 223 to standard to magnum bolt faces)
Stock/chassis of choice (finger fuck a bunch at 22 matches with the RimX and Vudoo guys)
Proof steel barrel (thread on thread off super simple)
Trigger of choice (same thing. TT Special/Diamond popular choice for basically everyone)
    Atlas CAL with RRS/A419 knob
Vortex Strike Eagle 5-25 with vortex PMR or hawkins rings or ARC M10

Exactly. General target shooting for the most part and dabble in some matches every now and then. You reckon I could do all that for around $3k or so? I can afford to go a little over budget, if necessary, but I'd love to do a custom build if possible. Really appreciate your input.

    Origin $900
    TT Special $200
    Proof Barrel $500
    A419 Hellfire $200
    KRG Bravo MDT XRS $400
    Strike Eagle in Rings $800
    Atlas CAL and clamp $300
    3 Magazines $250

I rounded some up to include shipping

    As far as cartridge

Its hard to argue against 6.5 Creedmoor as a general purpose rifle

6.5PRC probably isn't the best choice for ammo cost barrel life or recoil
