First off I want to say hello to the community. I have been a long time reader but finally decided to join tonight. I am by no means an expert at shooting but love to do it. I would like to get into mid to long range tactical shooting. My question is would I benefit more by spending the extra money for the fluted barrel and muzzle brake on the FCP-K or should I go with the 10FP and take the extra money and put on my optics budget. Please be gentle guys as this is my first post. Thanks in advance.

Re: Savage 10FP or 10FCP-K

do you want a mag? have you held either? there is a nice 10fcp for sale here right now with an HS stock and 20moa ferrel base. they all shoot. fp, no mag. fcp, mag. 10fcp-k has a mag and a muzzle brake. brakes are hard on shooters next to you and guys here say some ranges dont allow brakes. fp, basic fcp and fcp-k all have plastic generic stocks. do you want to upgrade stocks? the fcp-k is in an accustock. if you put the action in a regular stock, you lose the benefits of the accustock and may as well get the fp or fcp. the HS or McMillan stocked FCPs save you the hassle of looking for a better than generic stock. the 10pc is nice too. i just bought the 10fcp-hs stock and was happy. i found out about the variables after others here tried to decide like you are now.

you have to ask yourself what you want/need in a savage and then its easier.

just enter savage in the search and read away. more people are buying savages here and posting about them

optics... thats a whole nother level. feel free to ask any questions, just PM me if you need to. there are plenty of us savage nuts here

Re: Savage 10FP or 10FCP-K

Buy once, cry once. Save more money, buy a better rifle and the best scope you can afford. If you dont, you will soon anyway. I speak from experience. Now if you want to just dabble at it, I understand the Savage is a fine gun for the money and there are plenty of pretty good optics for a reasonable amount of dough.
Problem is once you get started you are gonna want more.

Re: Savage 10FP or 10FCP-K

I am new here also. I just purchased a 10fp two weeks ago. I like the gun, it shoots great to me. I will be upgrading the stock when I get the funds. I would not call myself a great shot by any means nor am I an expierenced reloader but this gun shoots under an inch with my loads and me pulling the trigger, and I am sure it will get much better with practice.

Re: Savage 10FP or 10FCP-K

A few months back I went with the FCP-K. I wanted the flutes and brake. I would have bought the HS Precision FCP but the only way you can get the barrel with flutes and brake is with the -K model.

I dont like the accu-stock and I will replace it. However it's not due to the accu-stock features, I just prefer a more pistol grip oriented stock. Also the comb drops a little too much for me.

That being said, it seems to be a good shooter though I don't have much range time on it yet. I do not regret the purchase one bit! If I was to do it over again, the only thing I might do differently would be to contact Savage and ask the custom shop if they could build me an HS version with the fluted barrel & brake. Would have saved me some hassle. On the other hand, I now have my eyes & heart set on a Manners stock and I am sure I will be happier with it then I would have been with the HS or McMillan offerings.

Re: Savage 10FP or 10FCP-K

The Savage will do you just fine. You dont have to have highend gun to shoot well... Bang for your buck Savage is hard to beat.

Infact most of it is the driver not the equipment!! Dont get me wrong, having a nice rig does make it a bit easier and you will look even better shooting it but you dont have to have it. Some just want to keep up with the "Jones" and couldnt shoot shoot a $5k gun any better than a $1k gun. But they are ready and willing to give you their opinions.

Its practice, practice, practice and good technique, cause with out those it makes no difference how much the equipment costs.

Re: Savage 10FP or 10FCP-K

You won't regret it. As far as optics, that's a budgeting issue. There are many different options in different budget categories.

Depending on your intended use, you cannot go wrong with a Super Sniper of any model (although, I would recommend staying away from 16x and 20x but their quality of construction is the same) until you decide on higher end should you decide you want to upgrade.

Re: Savage 10FP or 10FCP-K

The accustocks are nice rifles and group well. It will take a while for the market to deliver some accustock replacements since the bolt release and recoil lugs are different. In the meantime, I doubt you will have any issues or troubles with the FCP-k.

As some folks said, some ranges don't allow breaks.

Savages are great rifles. Don't let anybody tell you differently. I just had a run-in with a guy that told me Remingtons are better but my rifle (savage) was pretty. A few minutes later, my "pretty" rifle outshot his "better" Remington.

Re: Savage 10FP or 10FCP-K

I have the 10 flcp-k. The fluted barrel will help if you will be making shots in fairly rapid succession. I refuse to beleive that by removing material that the barrel gets stiffer. It does, however, add surface area which will allow it to cool faster. I'm a Savage believer. I have two of their rifles, one on order, and one being searched for. Who cares what the rifle looks like if it can out shoot a "pretty" rifle.
