I've been bouncing this question around for a while now, and figured I'd come to (the hide) for their take on it too.

Rather than buying a new rifle, I want to convert my Savage to be a little more tacticool.
I have an old gen of the 10/110, .308, 5 round internal, bolt action. Gun is good for .63 MOA, I can hit about 1 MOA at 100, haven't had much of a chance to shoot longer with it.
I want to put in a detachable box mag, tactical stock, and better scope.

Looking for suggestions on what you all look for in a field worthy DMR.
What's a good scope to shoot out to 1k without costing 1k (Is there one?)
I'm pretty DIY, but is this conversion something I'm going to want a smith to do?
Links to painting a rifle?
Threading the barrel for flash/sound suppression?

I shoot the same platform. Not able to pull the trigger on a custom job yet so this is how I set up my Savage 10. Bell and Carlson Medalist Varmint/ tactical stock (glass bedded reciever ourselves), had smith cut barrel down to 20" and thread for can, installed 20MOA base, topped with Vortex Viper PST 6x24 MRAD, and David Tubbs Final Finished the barrel. It will in fact shoot well out to 1000K. At 100 it is shooting 1/2 MOA with handloads. I havent played with the detachable mag yet but it is always an option for the backburner. I figure save the beans and buy a custom setup sooner. Just my .02.

I have a model 10 .308 from the first year the accu-trigger was available. It has always shot lights out, and over the years as I have been able to toss more $$ into it, it has only improved. Out of the box it was always sub MOA, and now its in the 3/8-3/4 MOA territory depending on load. It runs everything from sierra 110s to berger 215s, with the bread and butter being the 175smk. The barreled action is still unmodified. Added a bell and Carlson medalist inletted by CDI precision for their bottom metal. Running alpha mags with great results. I was in hog heaven for 2 years with a 5-15 bushnell mil-dot scope, and was finishing in the middle of the pack at 600 yard F/TR matches. I have recently added the bushnell 6-24 with the G2DMR reticle, and IMO its the best thing going under $1000. The vortexes are very good scopes, but I feel that the G2 reticle pushes this scope into first place at that price point. The scope is sitting in Weaver tactical 6 hole skeletonized rings, mounted on a weaver tactical 20 MOA rail. A harris swivel bipod on the front and triad wedgie on the back round out the package. Aside from the action inletting, everything else has been done with an allen wrench. On our place the terrain limits us to 800 yards or so, and 66% ISPC torsos don't stand a chance. I like to think I couldn't have gotten more performance for the money invested.
