Which scope would you recommend for a Remington Model 700 Target Tactical 26” barrel for shooting over 1000 yds.
VX 3I LRP 6.5x20 30mm

Or

VX 3I LRP 8.5x25 30mm

In the scope sub forum there is a thread at the top with tips on asking scope questions. You will get more scope help there. Let us know what cartridge you are shooting and what are your targets? Big steel or are you after tiny groups?

Planning on shooting steel with 175g FGMM

go to the optics forum and click around for a few days. not to insult you, but you'll make a better decision having a broader knowledge base

lots to learn and this site is loaded with info on our sport/hobby/obsession

This is a solid point. I have shot that exact ammo at 1200 and it was not nearly as tidy as at 800. I made up some hand loads with 175 smk and got to 1400 but my hit to miss ratio was pretty poor.

Consider a load that uses the Berger juggernauts. might get a little farther with them.

Yup I was well into the transonic range in both cases (factory and handload) but I was able to get some on steel. I had the range and the ammo so why not lol. From what I have heard those Berger's are pretty stable in that transition though. Need to load up a few and try them out next time I have some room to stretch.

When you say "over 1000 yards", I assume you mean another hundred yards more. Because beyond that your ammo of choice is running out of steam quickly.
175 gmm is not limited to 1300 and in. At the South Dakota Guardian match, lots of us were taking that cartridge quite a bit further. Just have to make sure you scope has the ability to dial it and reading the wind is key.

You can go off roading in a Bentley, too.......

I get your point. But do you get mine?

Sure. There are better choices out there now that travel through the transonic a bit better. For example, the Berger 185 that Federal loads as well. I would much rather take that load to that distance and even further just to stretch the legs.

It was probably yawing sideways like crazy, but a hit anywhere on steel (even backward, I guess) still counts as a "hit" right? o_O
Well being that Jim Gilliland took out an enemy sniper at a little over 1367 yards (1250 meters) with an M24, I guess a hit is a hit. Or in the case I mentioned, 5 shots taken, the last three being hits on 30 inch by 30-inch steel. I don't think that tumbling, backward projectiles would be able to hit 3 in a row.
