wherever I may roam...
I know some of you fellas are expert on this,so help a brother out. I've never been much of a scotch drinker, but I got a bottle of 12 year old Glenlivet from a doc I work with. Would like to enjoy the gift, not just get shit faced. Thanks for the tips.
Eric
Oh yeah, how should I store it?

Re: Scotch question

The best thing to do is try some without any water. If you can deal with the taste and whatever "bite" it may have then do so. Should you find it a bit strong add some water. The water should be room temp. Ice or cold water could subdue the aroma and flavor. Slow small sips are best so you can enjoy the flavors. There are often multiple levels of flavors that can be picked out and enjoyed.

Storing it is simple, keep the bottle closed and store in a cool, dry, dark place such as a bar or kitchen cabinet.

I nice cigar is always a compliment to good whiskey in my opinion. Choice is cigars is a whole other matter as there are a great number of flavors/tastes to be enjoyed there that allow both the scotch and cigar to compliment one another.

Drink up and have a happy holiday!

Re: Scotch question

Agreed, No ice, and don't mix it with cola. Some guys use a bit of water to "open up" the scotch flavors. I do not, I drink it straight, just pour a small amount into a short rocks glass enjoy the flavors and burn. Balvenie has a nice site for scoth drinking. Nothing special for storage except maybe a nice display in your home bar area.

NO, NO, NO! Do not put ice in Scotch Whiskey...

Here is a guide to get you started:

Remember to drink it slow and enjoy the flavors.</div></div>
Treebasher, that is a very handy and poignant tome. One that truly should be required reading for every student before graduating high School.

There are far too many "Namby-Pamby-Candy-Drinkers" out there, who have to have soda/pop/umbrella's/coconuts and fruit/vegetable salads in their 'drinks'. When more of society is learned how to drink like a man, then maybe,,,, just maybe.... more of society will start to act like men. (the male portion of society, for all you preverts out there)

Kudo's to the OP for actually asking. He knows what he doesn't know. Merry Christmas!

Re: Scotch question

Thanks for the info gents, so just enjoy it like other fine spirits. I like my bourbon straight up, so we'll see how the scotch goes. Thanks again, and have a merry Christmas. Happy holiday's.

Re: Scotch question

Ya the Balvenie is some good stuff . The 12 is Real Good smooth sipping .
the 12 is nectar of the gods . But, I just now finished off a little of the 21 & I can not verbally describe just how much more smooth & good it is over the 12 .

The Full Cask Strength on the Bowmore is the only thing I will put a splash of filtered water in with a teaspoon of crushed ice in .
But when you tame it down a bit with a splash . I swear to you can taste the ocean sea mixed-in with the peat & smokey flavor .

Re: Scotch question

I have no Scotch experience but am not new to bourbon neat. Where to start? What are some you fellas recommend to somebody not new to a good straight glass full but new to Scotch? Can decent Scotch be found at the local ABC store?

Re: Scotch question

Balvenie Caribbean Cask was recommended to me as my first bottle, it is very smoothe, I have tried it straight, 2 ice cubes, a little water mixed in, and I perfer to drink it with the 2 cubes of ice in it, let it sit for a minute before enjoying it.

Re: Scotch question

How many here, store certain bottles in the freezer? Not necessarily Scotch, but cold booze is best 'cold'. And/or store glasses in the freezer?

Melting ice dilutes drinks, and changes their flavor. Some drinks are best served 'cold'. While others are most definitely best served room temperature, or even warmed (hand warmth)

Lastly, who uses frozen granite cubes, for the cold but not the dilution. Or any other media doing a similar task?

Drinks are to be enjoyed, not abused. Now where the heck did I get this bus from? Never taken a bus before.

Re: Scotch question

Fresh out of the bottle. No additives ever.

Re: Scotch question

Johnnie Blue is excellent, never had better scotch. Though I did enjoy the Glenlivet and Glenfiddich, both 18 or so I think. But that may have jus been because I hadn't enjoyed a scotch in a few months as I was in Iraq.

As for freezer, yes, I keep Jack in the icebox

Re: Scotch question

To the OP, proceed with caution.

In a couple of years you may find yourself driving on the wrong side of the road to Craigellachie, Speyside. You'll check in to the Highlander Inn with the intent to try a wee dram of every whisky they stock. Have plenty of time and money. Hopefully, Duncan still runs the place.

Vodka, Gin and Limoncello stored in the freezer.

Been many years since I was in a NC liquor store but you should be able to find Glenfiddich and Glenlivet with out any problem. A good one that is on the reasonably priced side is Isle of Jura.

This one is excellent, though I prefer it straight. I can't get any of my family or friends into drinking Scotch,if they can't put Coke in it it's a no go.

Re: Scotch question

It shouldn't be around THAT long to worry about storage, but before it's opened, it should be stored like wine keeping the cork submerged preventing evaporation. Try Lagavoulin and Dalwhinney when you are ready to upgrade from the Glen.

Re: Scotch question

Walker blue label isn't worth the coin, smooth, yes, but best left to your wife, I don't feel it jumps over their simple black label enough to justify its cost, hell even at $100/bottle I wouldn't buy it again.
I just bought a bottle of Dalmore single malt and it's horse piss, wouldn't recommend it to my worst enemy, fact is, even he deserves better.

Neat is my method, brandy snifter style glass, as eluded to earlier, allows the scotch to be swirled without being spilled, tighter mouth concentrates aroma, works great.
Montecristo platinum is a cigar I've really enjoyed as of late, but, I like my scotch or bourbon dark, these have bolder, stronger flavor, I echo that with a dark cigar to draw the most flavor out of each. Lighter cigars won't cut that hit you get from the strong alcohol content.

That is a big reason blue label doesn't cut it for me, feels like a woman's drink, light and fruity, fuel for a tight box.

But, I need a better scotch, still searching for great in this area, for a bourbon I actually like wild turkey rare breed, very strong, but filled with flavor, incredible with a good cigar.

I've also ran through a lot of horrible Brandi searching for something decent...
For whisky, crown royal black is enjoyable, far more than its original counterpart.

Re: Scotch question

Another good Scotch that is Really goes down Smooth sipping flavor & priced reasonable also is ( Caol Ila ) .
It is just as smooth or little better than Balvinie 12 .

Re: Scotch question

I consider myself a beginner in the Scotch and Cigar arena. The first time I had a glass of Scotch I sipped it with ice and smoked a cigar. The ice cube was really big which slowed down the melting. I think a little bit of water helped me though because it being my first time, I don't think I would've been able to handle the flavor straight.

Anyway, so I thought I was cool sitting there on my porch watching the sun set behind the Eatern Sierra Mountains, sipping on some Scotch and smoking a full bodied cigar. Well when I was done and went to stand up, holly shit I almost fell over because of how fucked up I was. Good times!
