SF Crest Maroon Beret?

A question to you SF types out there. Just saw on the news the picture of the four Army Special Forces guys killed in Niger. One of them is wearing a maroon beret with the SF crest on it. Never seen that before. Maybe he passed the Q course and was waiting for an SF assignment? Just curious.

I believe Johnson was an 82nd Abn guy deployed with the team as a C4I specialist.

Not SF... assigned to the mission because he had specialized skills and was HSLD enough to be part of the training/G2 team.

That's what I understand, but I may be wrong.

A soldier assigned to a Special Forces Group but not Special Forces-qualified wears a maroon beret if airborne-qualified.

a support MOS attached to the group in some type of support role.

i seen motherfucking legs attached to airborne units wearing berets....chaffed my ass. these days. it seems earning a beret is not necessary.
