There are MILLIONS of potential fiery deathtraps out there in every neighborhood, town, and city right now, in the form of electric scooter and electric bike batteries being charged indoors, using poorly maintained equipment and no supervision by their users. And on top of this already hazardous situation, many of these batteries and chargers are of subpar quality and extremely cheap factory-discard straight to discount wholesalers coming from Chinese factories that want to save money by selling defective products at lower prices instead of discarding them, taking the loss, and potentially save lives along the way. Anybody right now can be living in an apartment above somebody who is charging racks of ebike batteries off a home circuit, and that is insomnia inducing to the maximum.

Maybe Webster needs to ad a new adjective to the dictionary, one that modifies, or even replaces, 'Junk", like Chinese. As in :

    He bought a Chinese car.

In fact, early Chinese boats were called Junks.

All my lithium batteries, save the ones in equipment, are stored in a 50cal box, painted yellow, with multiple 1/16 holes in the top (to vent if fire).

9 fatalities in NYC this year alone. FDNY is rolling out new fire codes related to charging Li-Ion batteries. I think it is a paper tiger though as they don't have the manpower to enforce it

So if one of them has a thermal event then you have a hell of a mess. Storing them together in an ammo can does nothing other than increase the likelihood that a fire from one battery going south would be a major event versus a small one. A lithium fire from several batteries will melt that can in no time. The holes in the top will do nothing other than allow molten projectiles and fumes from the boiling electrolyte to fill your house.

I would think about doing something different...like not storing a lot of batteries in a single container unless it is approved for HAZMAT storage of Li-Ion batteries

    YMMV

    we use these...

I bought a bunch of those fireproof battery charging bags for all the Lithium batteries I have, including camera and other types. Some are big enough to put the whole charger & battery in, and have holes to run the power cable in to charge them while everything is inside the bag.

So many counterfeit batteries and chargers out there that it's cheap insurance. I probably spent $80 total on fleabay or Amazon for them.

As for the burning garbage trucks, had a suspicion about the company ownership which was borne out by a search: https://www.bizapedia.com/ca/idiskk-llc.html

Just like the back entries of some Chinese restaurants, everything is the same as the home country. Uncontrolled immigration will turn us into a 3rd world dump. Normal people would have code all over them, while new 'guests' don't ever seem to be inspected.

The really sad part is most of these lithium battery fires are not spontaneous and are the result of user error. Most common is folks who overcharge or quick charge batteries that can't handle it. The only LiPo battery fires I ever had to deal with was deliberately shooting swollen ones that were totally useless and too dangerous to charge.
