I’m thinking about thinning out my AR herd in order to procure a thermal scope. Is this a good idea? Or should I wait for prices to go up next summer/fall.

What’s the minimum number of AR’s to keep?

AR’s are the only longguns I own at the moment.

My main worries are home defense, future bans and civil unrest.

Other concern was maybe I should get thermal before the election in case there are riots.

night vision would serve you far better during any type of civil disturbance or that type of thing. thermal is great for detection and game use but in a bad environment if I could only choose/buy/afford one device it would be a pvs-14 hands down. the versatility of being able to walk, drive, scan through glass, detect any form of the tiniest bit of light from headlights etc that cannot be seen with thermal far out weighs picking up shit with a thermal. if bad dudes came calling you would most certainly want to id them verses they wind up being a family member or friend you harmed because you couldn't tell who they were.

that's my .02 after decades of use with both systems.

My only add (me being the thermal bigot around here) is thermal can "see the threat" ... and if I only have one widget ... at least I can tell if I need to "run" or get back to work.
But what KSE says is all true. And that's why I have 4xgen3 nv ... as well as 7 thermals (and 2xgen2 NV) you really want both.

How many new threads are you going to post asking other people if you should trade your shit for other shit?

I mean come on...

We've gone from threads about you playing video shoot em up games to your 16" AR's to thermals to trading your shit. I think you play too many video games. Do your research and make decisions for yourself like the rest of the world..

What would they do in COD?
They'd take down a Hind with a knife and two bullets from a Desert Eagle!

More serious answer for OP: NVGs and an IR laser would probably be more versatile compared to a thermal optic. A monocular or something might come in handy but you will barely be able to tell friend from foe at the distances where you would WANT a thermal optic. It's not like the video games or movies where friendlies always have flashing strobes on their gear, if you're worried about an impending civil war. If you really want thermal or a FLIR or whatever, you can get adapters or apps on your phone or monoculars, but a good set of NVGs would be my preference.

As for selling/trading ARs, that's up to you. Older night vision can be found relatively cheap if you're willing to go with that instead of the newest generation stuff.

Nah but I'll go raiding the Army Airbase here in the middle of the night with a golden AK and Desert Eagle like a true Cheeki Breeki for some. I'll even steal a tank for you if you like.

I’m sure you never watch Netflix or Football? I only recently started gaming becuase I can chat with my childhood buddies across the country.

We are all Republicans and hunt/fish and shoot.

I’ve been hunting for 15 years and only been gaming for a few months.

I’ve killed over a hundred deer and am about as pro 2A as you can be.

But I’m an asshole for playing video games?

I dont care what way you swing or vote or if you play video games. I dont game or hunt. Nobody cares. I havent killed a single deer. Nobody cares. Nobody called you an asshole. You joined the largest, most respected online precision rifle community with industry leaders, pro shooters, leo, mil, etc. and your first thread is hey i play shootem up games and I like it...But youre wondering why your catching flak?

You then have started the same thread what 3x now saying I own an AR and I think I should sell them to buy this so I can SHTF. What the hell does that mean? Have you done any research. Im gonna say no cause you havent asked a single legit question for us to answer.

Now, if you came on here and you first thread read something like.....Hey Im new, I have two 16" AR15's. I want a short barreled pistol/rifle to more easily maneuver in my home in the event I ever need to. What length should I go with? I know Im loosing velocity compared to my 16" AR but how much before the round becomes less effective?

Do you see where Im going with this? If not then god I cant help you. Do your research, ask specific, pointed questions if you dont know the answer AFTER you've done your research. Nobody can tell you if you want a AR pistol, or a bazooka, or a Barrett 50 or a Derringer, or a dildo. Only YOU konw if you want or need those things....

A lot of these posts you've made and questions you've asked and how you asked them lead many to wonder how old you really are....If your an adult then see my above suggestions. Welcome to Snipers Hide and I hope Ive helped you

Ok. I’ve been too poor most of my life to even think about NV.

So I am a beginner in this department.

Also, having only recently escaped poverty i’m trying to be prudent regarding new purchases.

You’re free to ignore me.

I’m a blue collar guy in my early thirties focused on supporting my family before my hobbies.

This stuff is expensive for me so I ask a lot of advice before any big purchase.

And yes I was busting balls in the video game thread, however, I got attacked by like a dozen people. I honestly thought most were just joking. Sorry i’m new.

keep the ar and then go get the thermal if you want it still why sell your stuff for something that may or may not happen and regardless of if it does or not I am still keeping my ar I payed for it and Its mine if you want it come and get it . I could hide my family in a hole or but what good does that do ? live your life have fun and enjoy people made and sold moon shine during prohibition and unless they were really sloppy no one ever knew . Ain't no criminal worried about confiscation then nigher will I .

I’m not worried about confiscation so much as not being able to buy AR’s anymore.

My interest in NV is mostly due to the insanity of the Dems. I’m worried the left might get violent when Trump gets re-elected.

I want to be able to protect my family.

Hang onto your AR's, they will only go up in value. Plus, the cost of entry is pretty low. Save your dollars and buy one of the NVD/Thermals suggested in the above posts.

AR's are relatively cheap to feed, very common and it seems like just about everyone makes them (or at least aftermarket parts).

Buy more ammo.

BTW, the re-election of DJT should never be considered as a given. Plan accordingly/for worst case. If he doesn't get re-elected, I think most of us know what's coming next.

Pretty sure my great-grandpa or great-uncle (or both) got paid off by the moonshiners who were lurking in the woods back of his auto repair place back in the day. They weren't harming no one and as long as they never saw the still they could plead innocence.

Selling a gun? That's about the most un-american thing I can think of, unless your selling it to me for a stupid good deal... In which case, best idea I've ever heard of.
Never ever ever ever ever ever ever ever ever ever ever ever ever ever ever ever ever ever ever sell a gun.... Even if it's some crap like a highpoint, or worse, a Glock. .....

Buy yourself a nv monocular. Don't get something fancy. Buy it to try it out. I bought a cheap monocular and had some fun, but I quickly found that I had little interest in night hunting, so it was no big loss.... Besides, friends like to mess around with it when they come over.... So it's fun.
As for the videogames and tv junk.... Get rid of it all. TV is an abomination. I got rid of my tv years ago and haven't looked back. Best choice ever. Bring your mind back to reality.
