Shoulder bump gauge?

Re: Shoulder bump gauge?

I have to say, I have never seen this product before but it looks interesting! Might have to check it out.

As far as what I have used, I have been fairly pleased with the Sinclair Bump Gage setup. It uses a caliber specific tapered insert which works well. A bit cheaper than what you identified and happens to work with other similar pieces of gear on your calipers including bullet comparator inserts.

I've used this for a long time. Mine is a Stoney Point. But besides that, it's the same. It's in line with the long axis of the cartridge, not set off to the side. I'm afraid the IT model will try to bind with the indicator stem being off center.</div></div>

I used those same inserts and bullet comparators for years until I got my giruad trimmer. I have the case holders cut when I get my chambers cut so now I just use the case holders.

Re: Shoulder bump gauge?

You could do it old school, remove the firing pin assy, remove the ejector and resize the brass until there is a slight resistence required to close the bolt. I have the Stoney Point it works good, but I think the RCBS or Redding might be a better choice, let your pocket book decide.

Re: Shoulder bump gauge?

I have and use the RCBS Precision Case mics, the Hornady LnL tools and some I have made myself.

Two things about the Innovative gage seem certain; it will work as well as any other AND it will be faster to use.

What will surprise first time users of such gages is how much variation in shoulder location will occur even when sizing consecutive cases! It's imperative that we use cases fire the same number of times with the same amount of lube, same lever stroke, same dwell time under compression for each one to reduce the differences. Even then we will still get a few thou variation due to variations in brass alloy, or maybe which way the ducks are flying that day!

For sure, while using the gauges I've learned that finding the "perfect spot" and locking a sizer die ring "right there" so I won't have to re-set it later doesn't work as well as we might hope.

Thus, while I know it's not "precise", I still adjust my sizers the "old school" way from time to time. Maybe 'cause I'm an ol' dude who has been doing it that way for decades, long before any such tools were available. ??

Re: Shoulder bump gauge?

I have not tried this but it looks interesting and certainly worth trying if you use factory barrels. If you use custom barrels have your riflesmith make you a gage with your barrel stub. He can run the reamer in part way and give you both a seating depth gage and bump gage. You might also have him make you a shoulder bump die like the Redding S die, (Newlon makes great blanks) from the same reamer used to cut your chamber.

Re: Shoulder bump gauge?

Looks really cool. I presently use the RCBS precision mic and the Redding Instant Indicator. This product is truly awesome. I screw in the die in position 4 on my Dillon 550 and I am able to check headspace/shoulder bump, OAL measured off the ogive, case length and bullet length according to the ogive.

Mark the problem i have always found with that (yes i do shoot br and am very picky) is that different rifles will like a different shoulder bump. Some like very little and the larger calibers like .005 thou. Just a matter of what your rifle likes.

Re: Shoulder bump gauge?

I'm using the Hornady Headspace bushing kit and I'm super happy with it. I think Glenn Zediker digs it as well.

+2 Although cartridge specfic, these are great for most jobs

Re: Shoulder bump gauge?

Guys,

I got the shoulder bump gauge from Larry.

Well made and simple in design.

I really like that thing.Especially the digital read out. What a fantastic idea, fast and easy to use.

Turns out that I had the die set to 4 thou shoulder bump on my 6mm AR turbo. Now after using the gauge I have the shoulder bump set to 1.5 thou.

It's nice to know exactly how far the shoulder is being set back!

Re: Shoulder bump gauge?

So Steve123, how does the Larry Willis gauge index off the datum line on each case (or does it)? Were you simply using once fired brass as your reference and then sizing from there to compare?

Also, I seem to recall reading that it was capable of measuring more than just the headspace between once-fired and resized cases. Can you measure OAL and length-to-ogive as well?

+1 for the .40 S&W empty brass. Works perfect to measure .308 shoulder datum

Hazardus,

Yes,the Larry gauge has a screw on one side and a v shaped claw on the other side that rests on the shoulder datum line. The screw can be adjusted in and out to fit any case shoulder.

All the brass that I measured was fired more than once.

I have a Tubb bullet baring surface measuring tool that I use for such purpose.

Yes you can do the other measurements but I haven't tried it yet.

It's a good tool and I'm glad I have it.The system works well and is easy to use.
