Hello, I used a Sinclair chamber gauge twice on my Steyr THB in .308 and had an average of 2.045". The trim recommendation for .308 is 2.015" so my question is at what point should I trim the case since there is a .03 gap? I also plan to chamber a FL sized empty brass and use my Teslong from the muzzle to verify the gap.

If your measurements are accurate, no harm leaving the cases long. Depends on how often you’d be fine with trimming the cases.

.308 Winchester SAAMI case length is usually listed at 2.015” max. Trim length is typically recommended at 2.005” - mine are usually trimmed to 2.010”.

In your case - perhaps 2.035”?

Wait for others to comment.

I've noticed a bit of a carbon ring, well, I'm not an expert so it could just be discoloration too so the chamber gauge seemed reasonable. I also got one in 6mm and 6.5 to check my other rifles and neither have a ring. The .308 brass and been trimmed to 2.005 for another rifle that was sold so a .04 gap may be the culprit for the "ring."

It probably is the culprit.

One of the reasons I initially decided on leaving my cases long.

But carbon rings can usually be avoided with good cleaning habits / routines.

Should a carbon ring pop up, it’s easy to remove with judicious use of an abrasive - even Mothers Mag & Aluminum Polish works very well. Only a very little bit of scrubbing is required, just try to not introduce any into the rifling.
