Take plenty of supplies for yourself. Food, water, extra fuel, good warm sleeping bags and chains for your truck.. I'm sure you know that but I wanted to meantion it anyhow.
I married a chick from Tahoe and got to see how they survived up in the Sierra Nevadas... 15' of snowfall each winter and I've seen 4' fall in one nightfall....You can't even see the houses from the roads (You get lost easily) They spray paint addresses on the sides of the snow walls. Their snow plows are 6' snow blowers mounted on 4x4 semi trucks... They have been known to chew into cars that got covered by new snowfall.....You can't see cars that get burried........Have fun.......SmokeRolls

Because the situation has become dire, Mrs. VSP968 sent me out earlier to get her a copy of her sacred Washington Post newspaper. After some debate, I decided to leave my big dumb 4WD truck in the driveway and strike out on foot so I could try out all my cold weather gear that I'd bought after lurking on NOBODY's forum.
After a forty minute walk through thigh deep snow to my emptied grocery store, I found that they only had one copy the Friday edition of the New York Post(Howard Stern to Idol?).
Knowing that this would be unsatisfactory and create problems for me later, I continued on my journey to the 7-11.
Along the way, I found abandonded vehicles everywhere, mostly Toyotas, adorned with bumper stickers and flags from South and Central American countries: they were parked at odd angles in large banks of snow.
In the 7-11 I found today's paper and spied the last remaining Hostess cherry fruit pie on the shelf- about the same time as an over dressed soccor mom holding a 22oz cup of coffee did.
As I lunged for the pie, she did too- but she slipped on the wet floor and fell flat on her ski pantsed ass, causing her black sable hat and $800.00 D&G sunglasses to fly off of her head.
While a Guatamalen day laborer helped her off the floor, I made my escape into the snow. My 1200 gram outfitter boots seved me well on the trip home.
Can anybody/NOBODY recommend a set of good snow shoes? We're due to get another 36 feet of snow today.

Was there a global warming summit this weekend in DC? God likes to do a smack down on those meetings. I remember either one or two years ago they held a global warming summit in Boston ( I believe).......................They received a blizzard and were snow bound............hahahahahaha.... TV news models continue to give conflicting reports for snow totals so it's really hard to tell. When they're not confusing me they continue to report from remote locations stating the obvious.
The USPS has suspended service. Everything in the DC Metro area is closed except for 7-11's, a couple of gas stations and Good Guys on Wisconsin Ave in DC. I know this because I just saw live footage of an couple of attractive ladies hitch-hiking at the corner of M Street and Wisconsin Ave. When asked where they were headed for, they giggled and replied that they were headed to their jobs as exotic dancers.
As the ladies got a ride from a large plow truck, the news model sneered.
My God! Direct TV just went down!
There's a rumor going around that the Super Bowl game may now be in jepordy.....

Lindy, I was going to correct you on the "smarter" and improve it to "richer" but then I realized that you'd just correct my correction by stating that they are "richer" by being "smarter" with their money and abilities, right?
Yeah, that's me, mangling a breadstick into a pretzel.
Now as to the weather, ya'll just take it easy and be smart. It's all "get-throughable". When I lived in Mackenzie BC in '98, we got 15 feet 8 3/4 inches of snow that year. Total.
I do know what it's like to not see the house from the road. (short driveway) As well as the ability to step off the roof of one's house onto the snowbank beside it.
Suggestions:
Ensure that your gas meter is vented (small amount but necessary) as well as your furnace intake is clear. Bank the house with snow as it does have insulating values if cold is expected as well. Exposed pipes can be kept from freezing if you leave it open a small trickle. (something to weigh against if you pay for water)
And just be extra vigilant with extra heat-sources. Too many homes are burned down at times like this, because the candle(s) were forgotten, or the drapes were too close to the portable heater, and whatnot.

WTF, VA stole our snow
This is screwed up. How comes VA keeps getting hard hit? We're further north and can't get shit. Snowboard is ready to go and we haven't gotten fast enough snowfall to keep the roads covered for snowmobiles in quite some time.

At 13 years old my dog is not nearly as excited about dragging his junk through the snow as in is younger days.

A few shots from S Central PA, we have ~28" drifts the length of the driveway. My new plow guy was a no show so we're stuck for now. Kids and dogs had a fine time.

Man, we got a whopping 3" - 4" last week! It was so much snow they closed the schools for three days, roads were messed up, holy cats it was just a great big charlie foxtrot for teh entire weekend!

Pit's and Staffies love the snow! Bulleit will literally play in it until his feet get so cold they bleed when it's icy. He does have a set of 'snow boots' from upstate ny but he doesn't want to wear that crap down here

We got just over 30". I have about 5 ft more of driveway to clear so that if I have a heart attack clearing the rest we can at least get the 4x4 to the hospital before I expire.
One of the joys of my new house is my backyard has the biggest slope in the neighborhood and all the kids come to sled down it. Can't wait until my boy is old enough. This storm though, the kids can't even make the hike. Maybe in another few days.
The last big snow here was in '96 and it was more like 14", half of this. I love it!

Your money is in private roads. My folks old house had a good 800 ft of driveway. It was on a road with 50+ houses that all had the same. Are we equipped? Hell no. The previous warning about things you don't want to plow into is worth mentioning though. You might have plowed into my ecplorer if you weren't looking close! They did my street, in a gated golfcourse type community, with a freaking caterpillar. The F-x50 with plow was doing finishing work.

Cooked large portion of squirrel stash tonight w/ gravy.
Using El Camino battery to run hotplate and Web TV.
Missed dz Lindy, but thanks. Will patrol for it early.

Is that snow wet and heavy? I wonder about the relatively shallow pitched roofs in those parts being able to carry such a deep and heavy load.
I've heard several roofs have collapsed.

That's what the code called for back then, so that is what I have. We'll see......

Start by removing the snow from about 4 feet up from the gutters, all the way around the house.
Then, and only then, do you start removing further up. And do it in a CIRCULAR pattern around the house. This way, the weight is removed in a balanced manner from the trusses/rafters.
If you were to do this one side first, then the other, the stresses are totally unbalanced and against the design factors of the structure, and your roof can "tip over" to the light side.
Not just can, but probably will. Remember what I was saying about the 15+ feet of snow I lived through. I've seen a lot. Not everything, but alot.
Protect your investment, because if you were to have the roof collapse, it could be an insurance hassle right there because the snow is an "act of God". Due Diligence, and all that crap.
Not a fight you want to partake in.

I think that if we cannot move in the next day that even my youngest daughter Earla's pet is in trouble. I have dug a pit to keep Joan Jetta in for now.

Remember this pic from a few years ago of the road in front of my property ?
We had the 50 year snow storm, then the same fricken thing again the next year.
This year we have only gotten maybe 6"
