Just ordered 500 Hornady 178gr Amax's to shoot in a 5R, and was curious if there were any "go to" loads to use. I have TAC, Varget, IMR & H4895, IMR 4064, and a few others. I'll be using Win, Lapua, and Nosler brass, probably with Wolf and CCI BR primers.

I have nothing to give ya.but this.just try what you are or was loading for a 175gn bullet.thats if you where loading for a 175gn bullet.

but if you haven't loaded for a 175gn bullet try varget with 43gn and work up.and loaded long.44gn is what I use with a 175gn smk and works good.and yeah keep me posted on your testing. If things go as good as I hope they do.I'll have to get me some and see for myself.I have a 5R too.

Varget. There are pages of .308 loads in the Reloading Depot at the top of the main Reloading section page.

45.7 Varget with a 178AMAX? Wow, that seems pretty hot. What brass are you using with that load? WHat kind of gun/barrel length and what kind of MVs are you seeing?

I shoot 178 AMAX's out of a 20" SPS-T using 45.0 Varget in Lapua bass with great accuracy. I'm just under 2600 fps, but I was starting to get pressure signs and sticky bolts at 45.3.

Re: So, what are you using behind 178gr Amax's?

I'm using 43gr of Varget seated to AI mag length, 2.8'' IIRC. Using Win primer and win brass.

Re: So, what are you using behind 178gr Amax's?

Anyone have any problems with the 178s stabilizing in a 1/11.25" barrel? The bullets are marked "1/10" twist"...

Re: So, what are you using behind 178gr Amax's?

Jason, my Tikka has a 1 in 11" and at 200yds they are very stable no yawing noticed whatsoever. And Im using 43grs Varget,210M,F-C, and 2.810" OAL. The groups show lots of potential having some bedding issues right now. But it will put 3 in same cloverleaf at 200.

Re: So, what are you using behind 178gr Amax's?

I don't have a problem stabilizing them in a 1:12 twist. Should be fine. Pick up a box to test rather than 1k at a time, all rifles have diff prefs.

Edited to add I'm using Varget.

Re: So, what are you using behind 178gr Amax's?

Thanks for the info. I'm likely going to start off trying IMR 4064, as I just picked up an 8lb jug this week. My goal is to get to under 3/4" and START SHOOTING! I've been so immersed with working up loads different rifles that it has gotten to be almost a chore, and I am ready to have fun at the range.

I use 44.2 grains RL15, CCI large rifle primer, and fed brass. I load them to AICS mag length.
