I want to get a Remington 700 SPS Varmint in .308 to get into long range shooting. I was talking to a local gun shop owner who does competition shooting and he said that it would be hard for me to get to 1000 yards with that gun. Now, I've learned a lot from this forum so far and I know the gun is not perfect, especially the stock, but is it really not going to shoot well at 1000 yards? And I'm talking about just the rifle, not the skill of the shooter. I'm completely new right now, but I want the rifle to be capable of the yard mark for when I am capable of that yard mark. I'm not expecting miracles from the gun, I just was thinking that with a good stock it would be pretty accurate out to 1000 yards with a good scope and match ammo.

Re: Starter Rifle question

Yes it will shoot to 1000Y but it's petering out by then compared to some other chamberings and blowing in the wind more.

Allot of guys are going to 6mm-6.5mm-7mm for their high ballistic coefficient bullets being driven at higher velocities.

The round will go 1,000 yards. The question is will you be able to hit anything at this range?Just like anything else it takes practice.Descent to good optics with moa to play with. And a plus if you reload.

Re: Starter Rifle question

so many people start with the 308 as a long range rifle. why not start with a 223, less recoil, cheaper. quite honestly until you get past 600yards if loaded with heavy bullets you will get very similar performance. it is alot easier to learn good habits when you aren't getting beat up by the rifle. when you get good out to 600yds then start looking at a nice long range rig or build one, until then I recommend shooting the piss out of a 223.

if you want the rifle to go to 1000yds easily buy a 6.5 creedmoor and shoot the factory hornady if you aren't a handloader, it will build alot more confidence than the 308.

hope this helps and don't overlook the savages I haven't had a model 10 or 12 that wasn't a great shooter from the factory.

Re: Starter Rifle question

I have been looking at the Savages also. And no I'm not going to be doing competition shooting, except maybe amongst friends. Thanks for the suggestion, but the .223 is not an option. Recoil doesn't bother. Plus if I ever have to use it for defense, I want a .308 at least. When I was younger (16-17) and would go shooting with my dad I was shooting a .300 Win Mag. I'd like to go with that, but since I'm a noob and need a lot of practice the price of the .308 is what sells me. Not trying to start a caliber war or anything lol.
