I'd like to purchase the Steyr THB Manners, but before doing so I'd like to know if anyone here can tell me if it'd be legal for production class PRS

MSRP seems to be $2395 I can purchase new for $1950. PRS rules state MSRP of $2000

I plan to shoot my first PRS match next year and would prefer to start in production class. I looked hard at the Hancock rifle in jan, but wate times scarred me off, then they closed it for new orders.

If this would get me thrown in open class I'll probably just build something instead.

Any PRS MD's that could way in would be much appreciated.

    Thanks

To touch on Lowlights thread, I would be less concerned if they had an armature class. Since they don't I think production class is my best bet for just starting out.
    Thoughts?

I believe that would not be in production class, you would need contact the PRS to double check.
For starting out, most shooters are Open Class, so Production class has less shooters in that class. But from matches I’ve been to most prize table walks are highest to lowest score. I shot Production this year but I’m getting a new rifle so I will have to move to Open because going over the 2k limit.

If I buy the THB with the std stock it's MSRP is $1750, but it's a lot less attractive without the manners.
Steyr kind of shot themselves in the foot here. Why have an MSRP above 2K when street price is $1950

I still might go for it since I do really like the THB manners. It's the mini chassis Manners so they aren't skimping. Only real down side I see is the proprietary mags + 10 round adapter. At least the mags are suppose to function well and allow COAL of 3.15 and have the 2 stage feature allowing single round loading on a loaded mag.

It doesn't make any sense to me. Kind of seams to tie into some of the conversation in the old PRS Jersey letter thread about gaming the stages. Manufacturers are gaming the rules as it relates to production class.

Example: Take a THB Manners and remove the hard anodized 20 MOA rail, strip the Mannox finish of the barreled action, and ship it without a magazine. Wallah you've got a sub 2K MSRP sim. to a Badrock or Hancock.

Steyr isn't playing the game and I don't blame them. That said it appears no-one is shooting a Steyr in PRS.

Fuck it, I'm going to get it and give it a try. Unless someone can school me on Steyr negatives I'm not seeing?
It's not going to be a dedicated PRS gun anyway, I'll hunt with it.

The only thing I don't like is the ugly mag adapter required to run the 10 round mags. That said it's nice to be able to remove for hunting with a 5 round flush mag.

The pros seem pretty strong. On paper anyway this thing adds up. I don't understand why it gets no Love.
    • 2K purchase price comes with a free 2 day class at Steyr Academy.
    • Same barrel and appears to be same action as SSG-08 so accuracy & reliability should be good.
    • 20MOA scope rail
    • 6.5 Creedmore = 25" 1-8T
    • Muzzle threaded 5/8" x 24
    • Tenon threaded so if I where out the throat in the 6.5 Creed I could have it re-chambered to 6.5 PRC
    • Mags accept 3.15 COAL = works with long loaded 6.5C or later 6.5PRC with long VLD's
    • Manners with (MCS) mini chassis including front pic rail for bi-pod.
    • 2 stage mag, so on a 12 round stage I could hand feed the first 2, then click the mag up and run out the 10.

    Hi,

OT but can someone explain the entire $2K production class limitation???

So a TRG-22, DT SRS, AI, etc etc is not a "production" class rifle even though they "produce" more of those than the "Production" class PVA Hancock, Badrock Precision, etc etc?

    Sincerely,
    Theis

My understanding of the Production class is to give new shooter a class to shoot in that is a leveled. I think the 2k rifle and 2k glass is a number that is will keep new shooters from trying to game the system. Just my 2 cents, the PRS always reply to questions.

Keep in mind it's a different bolt head on the 6.5 PRC. Be sure to factor cost of new bolt head, or bolt, in to that consideration.
Good point. I'm not sure if that bolt is a available?
I'll also have to ask if the mid length mag can be made to work with prc size case.
I'm no pro shooter so I'd expect it to take a few years to shoot out this barrel. By then maybe a clear winner will emerge from the 6.5 prc/saum/gap/wsm. I suspect Steyr is taking a wait and see aproach.

Well I bought it. Should have it in my hands in a week.
It will start life wearing an Athlon Ares BTR 2.5-15 Need to shop for rings, break, and bipod.
I'll probably start a thread for it since there ins't really any info on these anywhere.
Steyr actually lists the Barrel as 26.6" on the build invoice.
10.5 lbs naked so it should end up around 13.5 lbs less bipod.

I'm also curious how much difference the cip chamber is vs Saami

I have an SSG-04, and so far I’m pleased. Same action. Mannox is their version of Nitride, so not a ‘finish’. Are you sure it’s 26.6? I’ve seen various resellers confuse Steyr barrel lengths; my money is that it’s 25.6 inches. That’s the only barrel length I’ve seen available in the Pro series in 6.5 Creedmoor. If you shoot out that barrel, please share approximate round count.

If you have any questions, call Steyr USA and ask for Herbert, the rifle guy. Knowledgeable and helpful. While you’re at it, magazines are 15% off right now.
