Stock painting options

I recently got a new stock for my Savage FCP-K. I need to finish it, as it is a laminate stock.. Option 1, truoil it. Option two Krylon it solid or a 3/4 assed camo job. Option 3, I have a friend, that is working artist, who said he could paint it in a skull camo for the cost of paint and a bottle of Jamisons. I was showing him some photos of other people's rifles done this way, and he said, "I could do that easily". The gun will be used for target mostly, and hunting on special hunting trips every few years.

Any advice or reason to do one over the other would be appreciated. "Do what you want(s)" or Who cares type comments need not post. If you don't want to participate, move on to the next thread. Thanks. Here's some pics of the gun with the raw stock.

Which bottle of Jameson would you be trading your friend for the paint job? I'm not sure what your local price is but a quick google search finds a price between $22 and $290.

Just a regular bottle of Jamisons. Here it's about $25-$30.

I would take up your friend on his offer. I would trust almost anyone else more than myself to paint my rifle.

I'm with you. That's why I said 3/4 assed, I'm a little better than 1/2 assed but not much.

haha, yeah if i tried it would probably be 2/3rd assed. And at that price for a new paint job your couldnt beat it.

heck, if it turns out nice i'd send my stock to him with some money to treat himself to a bottle and a little extra for good measure..

It's pretty hard to beat a custom paint job for that price. I would jump all over it if it was me and if it turns out awesome, would maybe even splurge on two bottles as a nice "thank you."

You might have a decent amount of money wrapped up in all the different colors it takes to lay down a nice looking camo job with all the shadows and such. I just had ARP do my t5 in a skull camo job. And it has over 10 colors in it

Why paint the laminate stock?? Part of the reason to order a laminate is the look .... that's also why the price tag is high for a laminate. I'd stain it and put a coat of clear over the stain. If you were just going to paint it, why not go with a B&C or a McMillain since they are just fiberglass and resin anyway.


ETA: If that's the stock that came with it, I'd take it off and sell it. You'd probably get a good price for it.

The stock was $425. I really went with it because there was only two options for this gun. It's left handed and a long action with detachable mag. SSS or Stockade were the only two that didn't cost $800. Stockade was going to be about $100 more with all the options I wanted.

I got the stock from Sharp Shooter Supply. Their customer service leaves a lot to be desired. The stock that I got from them was the wrong color and they put the but hook on it which I didn't ask for. They do make good products, but I can't recommend them.

Way to nice looking to paint IMO.

Id leave it as is, or try to sell it and buy an ugly synthetic of some sort if your dead set on paint.

Just a word of caution with tureoil and black laminate stocks. The tureoil will turn you black stock a slight greenish tent. The yellow in the oil has a way of making it green.

To get a true black color I highly recommend shooting it with automotive clear coat. Prep the surface good and get two cans of auto clear coat touch up endless you have a spray gun. You want about 15-20 light coats and then wets and it down to a nice finish.

I recommend sanding to with a sand able sealer before you get it finished either way. The sand able sealer will help seal the wood and when you sand it off it will show you the low spots that need to be sanded more. I do two sand able sealer coats just to make sure the surface is flat..it save on the good paint.

Last piece of advice is use a sanding block as much as possible, makes the finished product much better.

I'm not set on painting it, that's why I started the thread. I will not be selling the stock. I don't mind the laminate look, but when my buddy said he'd paint it it got me thinking.

I didn't understand the e-3 barrick Reference,but it thing I catch your drift. I kind of dig the look myself, but I know it's not everyone's cup of tea.

I think I'm going to oil it. If I don't like it, my friend will paint it. How much truoil do I need? I'm hoping it will make the stock a lot darker. It will, right?

use Danish oil and leave it as a laminate. buy something else to camo. danish will seal the pores and keep your whiskers from getting plucked out. thats the stock i have considered buying just because i like laminates

Are you sure you can paint it after the tru-oil if you don't like the outcome?

Automotive clear coat looks great on laminates and you can have as much or as little shine on it as you want. To me clear coat looks much better than oil and you don't have to worry about color change and the fact that the oils do not adhere to the glues in the laminate

I know some guys use a Marine grade "spar" finish on laminates.

Ive always used TruOil or BLO on wood stocks. TruOil being a bit more user friendly than BLO.

To be honest, I would like what ever I finish the stock with to darken it a bit. I also don't want a glossy finish. None of my guns are show pieces. I just want it to be functional. I did order the stock in a camo type color, but this is what SSS sent me. I was just planning on doing a mat clear coat over it, but the color not being what I asked for and my buddy offering to paint it got my head spinning.
