Just ordered a new SAS Titanium 7.62 suppressor. I've read the AR-10, in general, functions while suppressed with no modifications. However, it gets dirtier faster and works harder, because it's over gassed while suppressed. I'm wondering if there's anything to look or watch out for? Lastly, what modifications have other done to make it work smoother - beside an adjustable gas block? Heavier buffer spring, buffer or both? Looking for input from those that have been there.

Thanks

Re: Suppressed AR-10A4F

I finally received my SAS 7.62 Arbiter and got it mounted today. I'm pretty impressed with the quality and fit of the SAS suppressor and brake. I also installed Tubb's CWS carrier weight and flat spring. This past year I've free floated the 20" barrel and had Bill Springfield work the trigger to 3 lbs.

Today I shot it for the first time in months. I was getting sub-MOA groups shooting Remington 150gr Core-Lokt's at 100 yards... big grin!

I was surprised by the increase in recoil, even though I went with the CWS mods. I'm still running the standard buffer at the moment, but I'll probably upgrade to a heavier one in the near future.

Now I've go to put some quality glass on it. Right now I'm favoring the IOR 2-12x36 Spartan. Just haven't decide whether I want the MP8 or CBQ reticle.

Re: Suppressed AR-10A4F

I have both piston and DI operated AR10-type rifles and I prefer the piston operation for suppressed fire. They run cleaner, operate smoother and are generally a vast improvement over the DI setups. BUT, with that said, you can run a DI rifle/carbine just fine with the correct equipment installed and with routine maintenance/cleaning after suppressed fire. You definitely want/need:

1) a Slash XH buffer designed for the AR-10 (carbine or rifle) shooting suppressed ( http://www.heavybuffers.com/products.html );

2) Ditch the damn flat wire spring. I have used the Tubb speedlock springs and don't care for them at all. The ones I have used did not work well at all and both were weaker springs than the stock Armalite buffer springs in my experience. When you order your buffer from Slash...have him send you a new recoil spring as a package deal.;

3) Last but not least, you really need a Gasbuster CH if you don't have one yet.

ORD - thanks for the input. I hear you about the piston setup. Actually, I was tweaking 300WSM for his reasons.

I bought this rifle new and it has run perfectly since day one. Even though I have made some modifications, I have kept all the OEM parts so it could be returned to OE configuration quickly. That said, I've been sitting a NM upper receiver for a while and when I build it out a 16" piston setup it likely.

Slash will definitely be hearing from me in the near future. I probably order the buffer spring, when ordering the XH buffer, and give it a try.

+1 on the GB changing handle.

I just got the suppressor and had been shooting it on my 10FLCP-K. I really didn't notice the recoil while shooting it. When I moved it to my AR-10, I was surprise by the increased recoil. It's doable, but you have to remember to plant it solidly into your should when shooting from a bench. If left as, is I can see myself forgetting and getting rapped, or worse yet making one of those funny smiles over the eyebrow.
