The way I understand it, to help with blow back when using a can on a AR there are a few things you can do.

1. PRI / BCM gunfighter charging handle with the RTV sealant mod.

2. Gas piston, less crap coming back at you.

3. H buffer to increase lock up time and let the barrel / can depressurize before opening the bolt.

which would you do first?

Also, I hear some people talking about how crappy a piston kit is with a can, am I missing something or are they just pissed the almighty piston is still getting crap in there face?

Re: Suppressing an AR, what to do first?

I shoot a POF 12x 5.56 suppressed. To me the thing that makes the biggest difference is the heavy buffer. I also have an XP wolff buffer action spring which I believe cuts down a lot on the blowback as well. I would worry about the cycling of the gun without the suppressor on, but I dont see myself shooting very much unsuppressed anymore!

The charge handle helps a little.

As for gas vs piston I think shooting suppressed really nullifies the piston system. Back in my unsuppressed days I really liked it because it kept the action so clean. Now however the action gets extremely dirty regardless. Remember almost all of the blowback is coming out of the chamber and barrel. The DI is going to add very little relative to that.

My two cents.

Re: Suppressing an AR, what to do first?

I run my suppressed ARs with standard recoil springs and DPMS two-piece heavy buffers. The guns still run fine unsuppressed. All mine are carbine length DI gas systems and barrels range from 11.5" to 16" guns. I am a big fan of the PRI GasBusters for a variety of reasons but they do help a bit with gas blow back. Also keep in mind some suppressors have less blow back than others so the suppressor you choose can have a lot to do with blow back.
