If I have a Surgeon 1086 long action, could I exchange the standard boltface that came with it for a magnum boltface if I wanted too?

I am gathering components for a 284 build on a long action. But, if these Berger 195s materialize, and it sounds like they will, I'm going to want to shoot them and I think it will require one of the short mags to do it effectively. Running Bryan Litz's equivalent pressure equation, looks like a 284 pushing 162amaxs at 2900 is only gonna get about 2600 from a 195.

A short mag with a long action, possibly the 7mmRSAUM with its long neck, looks like a killer combo. The 180vld wasnt enough of a performance boost to justify the barrel life issue for me, but this is in a different league.

I think this bullet, if the reports of G7 BC at .4 are true, is going to be incredible. Ballistic FTE has it super to 1800 yards at 2800fps, with around 50ish inches of drift at 1000, better ballistics than a .338 lapua mag with 300smks.

Re: Surgeon actions-mag and std bolts interchangeable?

Thanks Ratbert. This is my first surgeon action, so I didnt know if the action and bolt are some kind of matched set or if they are simply plug and play. In other words, I'm not really loosing anything by switching out the bolts right? I thought they might lap the bolt specifically for the action it came with or something.

My understanding when I talked to Preston about the same thing in a 591 is that they interchange easily due to the tolerances they keep.
