Im getting a Surgeon .308 cal. rifle this coming week and have done some reading on them and they sound like a quality piece but would like some input from some owners or anyone who has done any research on them. Im by far not a person knowledgable on guns and actually got this rifle on a trade. He gave me a price that he paid including the rifle and it looks like about 4K and a $1500 scope as well. Im thinking of selling but would like to know the value as used. I will post pics on it as soon as I pick it up, supposed to be here Mon. I can also get some specifics on it too. Thanks for any help offered.

Re: Surgeon Rifle Oppinions Wanted

All of my Surgeons are quality and they are all shooters. Preston and the guys at Surgeon Rifles are among the best in the business.

As far as a value, get specs and post pics here..

Re: Surgeon Rifle Oppinions Wanted

I don't think you are going to find anyone that is going to say anything bad about Surgeon rifles. Their actions, guns and work are well respected.

Re: Surgeon Rifle Oppinions Wanted

I just signed up here and dont know much about guns. Thanks for your help outlaw, as for the other two guys thanks for wasting my time and your own.

Re: Surgeon Rifle Oppinions Wanted

Hi Mac,

Welcome to the Hide. I have never had a Surgeon rifle but have only heard great things. They are something that most people desire but not everyone can afford. I do have 3 rifles with Surgeon actions and I can attest that those actions are extremely well made. In fact you might say they are overbuilt. It seems like they are one of those companies that does alot of things right. Put it this way, you mention the word Surgeon in the precision rifle community and people know immediately that you have good taste.

If its your first quality long range rifle that you are getting then congratulations...you are starting off with something special. When you take it out to the range and if it "doesnt shoot well" then its probably the operator not the rifle that is at fault. If you get hooked to the rifle then I suggest that you sign up for the online video lessons that Lowlight offers on this site. Its money well spent, very well done, and you will become more familiar with your rifle much faster b/c of the education.

If you find that its not for you then you will be able to sell the rifle at a very good price. They do not depreciate in value much.

Re: Surgeon Rifle Oppinions Wanted

It's probably not worth too much more than a factory Rem 700.
I'll give you $1200 for it. I'll give you another $200 for the scope

Have you ever shot Long Range or Tactical?

Re: Surgeon Rifle Oppinions Wanted

MacOne,

I would personally kick down the attitude a notch or two. It's not WHAT you say, but HOW you say it. In this forum, while a LOT of info can be obtained, there is also no taking of shit.

I will caution you on the look of "selling" though. Unless you have 100 posts, anything that looks remotely close to selling will be deleted.

I understand you're looking for information. But. . . I find it odd you'd trade for an unknown rifle for what you say are high $ dogs? Just sayin'!

As has been stated, Surgeon rifles are a rock solid action. If you have a complete rifle on a surgeon action, you have quite an investment in your hands. Go to their website or google "surgeon rifles" for more info.

-G45

PLEASE tell me you don't sell dogs to Michael Vick? I'll friggin' shoot you myself with YOUR gun if you do!

Re: Surgeon Rifle Oppinions Wanted

Thanks for the info, also as far as attitude im looking for more info on my new gun, not the typical forum wierdos trying to make me look dumb. As I had stated im not very knowledgable on firarms period. If I get kicked for that then I'll happily find another resource. Im not selling my rifle, I havent even gotten it in my hands yet.lol. The excitment I have is in part my reason for coming here before its here but im not trying to break your rules. Im not a complete rifle idiot(at least in my own eyes) I did this trade because I am interested in quality guns, and after a little research I knew I could most likely get my money back if I decided or close, there is a little risk in everything right? At least a cool rifle if nothing else.
Of course im not selling dogs for ANY illegal purpose. Im not that guy. Shoot put me in a pit with Vic. I pretty sure no one would buy a dog from me and then take the chance on it getting killed when you can pick free ones up at the local pound. Thanks again for your input.

Re: Surgeon Rifle Oppinions Wanted

No Im pretty new to the long range shooting. I currently own a ruger 10/22 with the stainless heavy barrel which I enjoy shooting and cant complain about the cost of rounds. Also, a Browning BAR .270 Safari. Its my deer rifle. But nice no less.

Re: Surgeon Rifle Oppinions Wanted

Surgeon actions/rifles are great, buddy.

And if your profile was completely filled out, there might even be someone near you who owns one and would possibly let you check it out... ? Or not.

Where are you located? What is the kennel name?

I have a red nosed, brindle pitbull that I am interested in breeding.
I would just ask for the pick of the liter.

Sorry buddy, I dont think this is the place to put out a lot of info on my business. Lot of people dislike the breed because of some of the morons that can't handle the responsibilty of owning a breed like the pit bull. As far as breeding Im very specific on what a do in my program. Thanks for the offer though.

That's tongue in cheek speak. Yes, 4000-5000 rnds is good. Some barrels go more, some less.

Re: Surgeon Rifle Oppinions Wanted

Seemed ok to me I mean if you figure 20 rounds per box at 5000 rounds your at 250 boxes and im guessing but a box is $40 . Thats ten grand just in ammo. Some serious shooting right there.Id be more concerned with getting a new shoulder at that point.

Re: Surgeon Rifle Oppinions Wanted

I don't know anybody who shoots alot who pays for retail ammo. It's all about handloading. I would go bankrupt if I had to shoot factory ammo.

And, a .308 shouldn't hurt your shoulder. If you're worried about that, buy a .22.

What he expecting to get out of it? 10k? What level of accuracy is it supposed to hold? .75" before he dumps the barrel???? I have a solid .1-.2" .260 and I'm dumping the barrel when it breaks .5moa accuracy. I don't care what the round count will be it just has to shoot. Perhaps your friend has a high expectation for accuracy.

Re: Surgeon Rifle Oppinions Wanted

Guy traded a Surgeon rifle and scope to a guy who breeds Pit Bulls and doesn't know anything about what he traded for?

Sounds pretty shady...

Anyone missing a Surgeon?

Surgeons are "okay"? I own a rifle with a Surgeon 591. Tell your good friend I'll take that bucket of parts off his hands anytime.

Surgeon makes their own action and offers assembly/gunsmithing services. Their barrels are from the best of the best - Kreiger, Bartlein, etc. With that in mind barrel life has nothing to do with the action, or even the barrel manufacturer, but rather the rate of fire, cleaning procedure and frequency, solvents used, etc., etc.

A used Surgeon rifle in fair condition should be valued at least 70-90% of the cost, subject to the eye of the beholder. They are elite in their class.

Here's my way of putting a value on a Surgeon. If (GOD FORBID},I had to sell my rifles not including the family heirlooms of course, the Surgeon would be the last to go,even out of my custom rifles!
