Reluctantly took a Swiss K-31 and 110 rds of GP-11 ammo in lieu of a payment recently. However after looking closely at it and doing some internet snooping I am quite intrigued with investing some time and $$ to enjoy it's potential. Ballistically similar to the .308 (GP-11 has been called Match Grade ammo at a bargain price), quality fit and finish with a great trigger pull, no to mention the unique bolt arrangement. The empties eject straight up and therefore require a forward mounted scope for my old eyes. S&K makes a mount that replaces the rear tangent sight with a Weaver-type rail. I would appreciate suggestions for some moderately priced glass that would be optimum for this combo or your experiences with the K-31 in general. Best Regards !! Joe

Re: Swiss K-31 Scope ???s

How about looking into mounting a handgun scope? That's what we did for my friend's Garand SOCOM. We were too cheap to get the rails that would go over the ejection port so we simply bought a 2-7x32mm Burris handgun scope and the thing shoots touching holes before its barrel heats up.

Re: Swiss K-31 Scope ???s

Handgun scopes work pretty well in this configuration. I have had good luck with Burris 1.25-4x26 as well as a with a few fixed power 2x20 and 4x32 scopes.

Of the inexpensive pistol scopes, I thought Swift was pretty decent.

Another option for mounting a scope on K31 (and that is what I do) is to get one of the "no-gunsmithing" clamp-on side mounts.

The best one I know of is available from www.accumounts.com, although you can also get one through Brownells (made by Swiss Products). I prefer the slightly longer mount availabel from AccuMounts, but both work.

The scope ends up offset to the right, but you can then use normal rifle scopes.

Buy the clamp on side mount. I have one and it is a much better setup than a rear tangent sight. The only issue is you have to kind of reach your head over an extra inch, which can make the wood stock batter your cheek a bit in recoil. Putting an Eagle cheek pad on solves that problem.

Re: Swiss K-31 Scope ???s

TargetTerror's advice is right on. I just recently got rid of my last K31, but they shoot.

The GP-11 is great stuff and the round is very similar to a 30-284 Win, it has more snot than a 308.

The throat in this rifle is VERY short. The GP11 of yesteryear (1950's) is a dual diameter bullet with a bore rider bearing surface up front. This means you have to load the rounds very short.

For some reason all 3 of mine shot 175-180gr bullets far far better than the 150gr reloads. I didn't experiment enough with it to make any firm determination as to WHY this is.

Also- Under the butt plate of your rifle could be a paper tag that has the original issued soldier's name, rank, S/N, unit and a date on there.

This piece of paper should be carefully kept as it adds to the value of the rifle a fair bit. I was told (could be a cruffler forum rumor) that you can decipher the tag and look up the soldier and unit online. This may or may not be true but it's a neat piece of history either way.
