Got one (front) hole striped. Did not know it when I bought the rifle. My question is, will a 8-40 tap work in the holes that are there or do I need to drill to tap size first. I know I will need starter and a bottom tap. I don't have a drill press or a mill and getting things level and plumb are important. Also will 8-40 screws fit badger rail or will it need drilled and counter sunk. Thanks, Javy.

Re: tapping 8-40 threads in reciver

A 6-48 tap drill is around a #33 drill (.113) The Remmy's I get typically gauge pin at .120 though which isn't surprising really. Little taps in hard chit tend to run on big side of the drill size for all but the most critical holes.

I use a #29 drill for 8-40's. (.136)

If I understood your problem/questio correctly, in my humble "O" it'd be asking a lot from an 8-40 tap if you didn't enlarge the hole first to the appropriate size.

Good luck.

+1 it would better suit you to have a smith open up the holes and tap for 8-40 than it would be to have to send you action out to have a tap burnt out because it busted off.

Please let a smith do this for you. My neighbor tried to upgrade his mount and hardware. Even as careful as he was... The reciver was hacked to a point of being unusable. Front hole crooked, rear hole filled with a broken tap. It did NOT end well.

Chad just d&t'ed my receiver for the 8-40's.
The factory holes were out of alignment on mine.
