taxes on postage to canada

Doe anyone know if you have to pay taxes if you buy something from the US and have it sent to Canada. I have a mate who is on holiday in Canada and I was thinking about buying a couple of things totaling around 3k US and getting it sent to him so he can bring them home

I do not know the answer to your question. My thought is that you should just make sure that the items are not ITAR items. It seems to me that if the vendor will ship to a Canadian Address you should be all right. No way to guarantee that though. If your friend had to pay Canadian taxes on recite of your items he should be able to get refunds when he takes them with him out of the country. Paper work would be required.
