Texas Plinking 10 rd Group at 1K Yards Challenge Videos

I was at a range where the 1000 was surrounded by brush and grass. After ten shots I gave up and went back to the 800. I guess I could have started a battleship pattern but didn't want to waste that much ammo.

Their idea of a great group might be lacking.

Also your sarcasm meter may be out of calibration.
Then I am the idiot in the room. It's me, the idiot. Perhaps using the word "great" was wrong. And I was not being sarcastic.

Just saying that things looked good but low.

I think a 24x24" steel target would be better. Would give instant feedback if you missed a 2MPH wind change somewhere along the way.
I was thinking just a huge plywood board nailed up to some 4x4s in buckets with concrete (cuz it's gonna catch a lot of wind) and then put a large piece of cardboard or paper stapled to it.

You arent an idiot, Ron.

I will give them youtube influencers props for truth in advertising.
At least they gave an unedited realistic video of that rifle performance.

Brandon tried it with one of his rifles and got an 11 inch group.

I was thinking maybe they can put those impact lights on the posts. When you hit it, there is a bright flash. This would also help with calls.

I suppose the grouping target is mounted with the center being approximately the same as the 1 MOA targets. That way, one could literally use DOPE (Data On Previous Engagements) and get that same elevation. And then, depending on wind direction, favor left or right quarter of target to make sure of getting on paper.

There is a lot of moving parts, here. Shooters have good and not as good days. Ammo, even handloaded, will have variances. The Texas wind will make you its bitch. It's not always constant, it can gust a little at just the most inopportune moment.

Read the membership info, only matches are public
So, that would mean that you cannot practice there, only compete there. Which gives club members the advantage since they would have already have a few handy wind calls and distance elevation.

Where would someone go in south Texas that has long range public facilities? We have few up here in north Texas that do not require memberships. The one in Terrell goes to 1 mile, in fact.

I posted about a match, and answered about a match.

If you're afraid of the competition, yeah, some have national records, and not all are members ...

No where, join my boat. You have to meet people and find places where you can get invited to shoot on private ranches. Or you can buy your own ranch as well.

These 1000 yard matches serve well to gather dope and get some data for your rifle though. Then you can go shoot a prs match using the acquired dope.

Theres already a fairly big thread on these videos.

The reason I did not post in that thread is precisely because that is the 1 MOA @ 1K Challenge.

This, OTOH, is the 10 round group at 1K. I see the two as separate events and that is how I think Brandon has been treating it.

Close, but not quite. Missed the money by about 1.025 inches. Really close, though, and a group to admire.

^^^ That guy keeps making me want to quit shooting 😄.

Doesn't know jack about his rifle, or cartridge, or trigger and position fundamentals...yet there he is...doing better than probably 90% of the dudes on here (raises hand) who come and boast about their superiority.

Obviously, on the firing line of an F-class match he wouldn't stand much of a chance...but still...

The inconsistency in his technique and his bad habits just made me cringe. But there he was, just killing it. He popped that 10" steel cold lol.

I signed up for the blackjack challenge but I haven't heard anything back yet. Who knows, maybe I'll shoot Brandon a message also.

That way we can discuss my poor technique and bad habits too.

I film mine and occasionally upload. Although I like to focus the camera on my trigger finger and eyes so I can critique myself. It's all I have out here with no potential coaches.

No way would I get on a big channel to embarrass myself in front of 500K people. It's bad enough when I do it in front of 84...

I upload all mine to my Onlyfans subscribe for premium content. For extra I’ll whisper your name when I pull the trigger

Nice shooting. Of the shots on paper, that was good. Like Brandon said, the trending can cause the need to change the hold gradually to adapt to rifle heat, mirage, wind, etc.

And you ammo friend has definitely done a good job, IMO.

My prediction if I were in that contest? I will hit that hill.

Well, that might fall back to the standard advice. No two rifles react to the same ammo in the same way.

Obviously!
But in general we know berger ammo is good, FGMM is good, and hornady match is good.

I wasn't asking if custom reloads of dallas was going to shoot 1/4" groups in my particular rifle with my particular barrel.

He was using custom reloads of dallas. I almost some of that ammo not too far back. Anyone try it? It's got very mixed reviews.
Buying reloads not tested in your rifle is no different than buying factory ammo imho. The tolerance may be better but if your rifle doesn’t like a particular load then tolerance means nothing

If you’re paying for reloads for your rifle they should be test fired in your rifle. Maybe these are and maybe not but otherwise fgmm is usually a decent go to. Otherwise if you want reloaded ammo then roll your own. Only way to achieve the real benefits of reloaded ammo

I do reload my own ammo. But sometimes, with having minimal free time, it's easier to buy loaded ammo.

I was under the impression this was more of a boutique type NEW ammo manufacturer, almost like eagle eye, black hills, or unknown.

If you guys would pay attention, he said his buddy made up several loads and he tested them.
If you pay attention, I asked about the Dallas loads, as in, in general. I wasn’t asking specifically about what the guy in the video used. I know he is friends with the owner of the ammo manufacturer company who did load development for the rifle specifically for the match.

Correct, Chad at Custom Reloads of Dallas loaded up 7 different loads of the 153.5 grain Berger for me to test in my rifle. Most of them shot pretty well with 2 better than the others. The hottest of those wasn't showing any pressure signs and he thought there may be another node if we go a tad higher so he loaded one more and that one ended up being the load that we went with. I don't have a chrono, so I basically backed into the velocity which ended up being 2,750 fps out of my 20" Tikka CTR barrel.

His normal process is to have the customer send/deliver the rifle to him then Chad shoots the test loads to find which one works best then loads up the ammo and provides it back to the customer along with the rifle. He is in North Dallas (hence the name) and I am in the Austin area, about 200 miles away so he sent me the test loads to shoot. I know he prefers to shoot the loads himself since he knows how good of a shooter he is, in an effort to eliminate other variables. We've been friends more than half our lives so he does give me some preferential treatment when it comes to his typical process. That said, he was super helpful in helping me prepare and practice for this challenge.

When I got the gun back in ~2018 he and I both shot different loads together with the 140 grain ELDM and he sells that as his "6.5 Speedmoor" load.

Thanks! I haven't shot paper more than 300 yards so this was pretty cool. In my normal load my gun is typically .1-.2 high on cold bore which explains why my shots were trending low. I forgot about that when I was shooting the challenge. Was cool to center punch the feeler shot, too bad it didn't count for anything!
