Thinking about building

I put together my first nice rifle.
It’s not a always a slam dunk like AR15’s.
You can run into trigger issues and a few others but definitely doable.
Torque values are easy.
Research parts wisely.

Is that a thing? Building a bolt action like you would an AR? Where does one look for parts other than Brownells? Any manuals out there for building for torque specs?

I need help folks

I've done it twice and I enjoy it.
I have built several ARs myself and you will need to add some tools to your list. Barrel vise, action wrench, lug alignment tool, inch pound torque wrench (for scope and stock). I'm sure you have a foot pound torque, if not get one. Go and no go gauges, some say you don't need them with prefit barrels but why risk it.

When you decide which action you are using order the barrel. I was told bang for buck you can't beat a Zermatt Origin so I bought one and I have to agree. It's a good start.

I don't shoot competitively unless you count a wager between friends, I built mine for hunting and I shoot steel at distance for the practice.

Good Luck with your build.

easier than an AR to build and 95% of the time there is no tuning needed

easy/budget build
zermatt origin
proof prefit from @Front Range Precision in any short action cartridge
krg bravo
TT special
vortex strike eagle 5-25 mrad with ARC M10 or vortex rings
accurate/aics/mdt magazines

other vendors
direct from the company that makes the part
Altus
SAP
Bugholes

other stocks/chassis
MPA, MDT, Manners, McMillan, XLR, Foundation

other barrels (need a gunsmith)
bartlein, kreiger, benchmark, on and on

other scope: endless

torque
rings/mount per manufacturer
stock/chassis per manufacturer
barrel: typically listed on action wrench but 40-80#

parts needed
action wrench
barrel vice
torque wrench in ft/lb and inch/lb
go/no go gauges if you want

to go any further you really need to provide a budget and rifle purpose

Steps:

- Decide on a caliber - more options are out there for short action vs. long action.

- Decide on an action - for what you're doing, an action capable of taking prefit barrels is best. Origin, Defiance Ruckus, Impact Precision are among the more popular of the many Remington 700 (R700) clones available.

- Find a company you can get prefit barrels from and get one to match your action - depending on the caliber and your needs, you can get it threaded for a brake (or not)

- Get an action wrench to match your action so you can attach the barrel

- OR -

- Get a barreled action where the two come already put together.

Note that the pic rail for mounting optics is an integral part of the vast majority of R700 clones, unlike the action after which they were all patterned. Many will have options for the slope of the rail (0 MOA, 20 MOA).

======================================

- Pick a trigger compatible with the R700 actions. The more popular include Triggertech Diamond, Geisselle Super 700 (tough to get right now), Bix n' Andy Tacsport, Jewell. If you want to go overboard, the best trigger I've used (by far) is the Bix n' Andy Benchrest. Absolutely insane, but it also costs twice as much or more than the others. Still... insane.

- Get a chassis compatible with R700 actions. Way too many to list here. Lots of choices. You want one with either a pic rail or Arca rail under the fore end - almost all have this.

- Depending on whether you threaded your barrel for a brake, choose a brake (or not). Get one of the self-timing brakes - there are many out there now.

There’s not much to add but I’ll mention something. Ask the action maker if they will time a trigger to your action if you send it to them. That seems to be an issue that gets people from time to time. If the action maker won’t, try finding an ffl/gunsmith that can at least check it
