Thinking the truck would sell like hot cakes,

I'm hoping to have another one of these in the future. I hear Missouri is a good place to find classic iron.View attachment 8794271
There are quite a few 67-72 chevys sitting around rural eastern Colorado and western kansas that aren't all rusted out. That was what I wanted when I got my first sqaure body, but axle swaps were easier in the square bodies. Swap without moving spring pads between all k10-k30.

The ranchers and rodeo crowd here, it's rare to see a horse trailer not being pulled by a fully loaded diesel.
Back when Aero and some other trucking companies were going out of business. We cut down a lot of trucks and made them single axle for barrel racers and people pulling horse trailers. A 3406 pulls those little trailers like nothing, last a million miles and got 10-12 mpg when pulling their "big" trailers. And had a living quarters right on the truck. People were getting them for 20-30k. A lot are still using them 15 years later. 🤣🤣

They're nothing like American diesels.
Superb mileage.
Gutless
Smelly and smoky
Less torque than the gassers we get here

I don't care would still bomb down the road in one. All I wanna do is haul my dog around and go shoot guns in the desert.

That one I posted a pic of has the 4.0L gas they used in the 4runner and Tacomas forever, it's a really good motor. Better than the 3.5L and the turbo they have now for sure.

I've seen a few of those out here one guy has a lifted one. These people in my area are all richy rich Orange county types with fancy horse stuff. The old time Arizona cowboys drive 1980s ford trucks covered in shit and blowing smoke.

I would love either one of these! In fact my next rig will be very similar.

the SUV format is perfect for me. my 1st was a basic Isuzu rodeo the year they came out. stripped down basic. power steering, brakes, standard trans,AC,heater nothing else. can't find anything close now. my "new" '18 Nissan is over run with digital useless sensors, camera, power everything. not even a door or ignition key. has some sensor push button BS. how does any of this shit make sense or make a better vehicle?
i am constantly in fear of some computer shit breaking and being down for weeks with big repair bills for things i hate, don't want like GPS for NSA to know everywhere i go.

But I was driving a V6 Toyota hills in 3rd gear overseas once and would get about 55 mpg all day long.

I drove one of the 4 cylinder 2.9 d4d hiluxs with a 14000 lb trailer load through foothills once and it did just fine unless the road got really steep.

I don't care if it accelerates fast or has much torque past the really slow speeds.

A great part of the rest of the world runs on the old Toyota Hilux which the government won't let us have here.

IIRC doesn't meet EPA Req's or safety standards.

IIRC they're diesels too so lots of torque and decent mileage:

200hp woot

It's the stupid fucking "CAFE" standards is why we don't get a true smaller truck anymore. Dumb fucks in government.

I'm still on the hunt for a mid 90's Landcruiser. I love my FJ but want another Landcruiser. I do have the loaded full-size, really wish I could get a more basic full-size.

Dumb fucks in government

An old Land Cruiser would be nice.

Also the Chicken Tax is another Hilux hurdle but there is a loophole. If you can find one 25 years old in good shape it's fair game.

Getting an import registered and insured is the next hurdle. I almost pulled the trigger on an 80 series 4door pickup with a flatbed and turbo diesel. The titling process in Texas proved to be more than I was willing to deal with.

Toyota could import the bare bones version of the Hilux, sell it as a non-plateable OHV to get around a lot of the emissions and other import restrictions, and they would sell like hotcakes still. Think a Mahindra ROXOR that's even more bulletproof.

No AC, no airbags, no ABS, no radio (single DIN space for a two way radio though), no sensor bullshit, none of the fluff crap. Manual transmission, manual transfer case, manual hubs, manual windows, make it a dirt worthy OHV and we'd buy the hell out of them.

I'm thinking one of the ones I ran the desert with didn't even have power steering, but it did have lockers and could lug down and up steep wadis in 4L like it was nothing. I could haul a shit ton of steel 1/4 and 1/2 IPSC targets in the back of it as well, the bed was full of targets and stands long before it hit the bump stops.

To the earlier comment of cab space, the Taco is like the WH ballroom in roominess compared to the cab of a Hilux. Fatties need not apply.

I would love to have one for a beater here on my land or up in the mountains running old logging trails. Of course around here, we drive OHVs everywhere but the interstate anyhow.

Having driven them I don't know where those alleged 200 hp go, guessing to noise and vibration. Sure as shit don't get many as far as the wheels.
Things don't accelerate enough to get out of their own way.

Having had minimal experience with the US spec trucks, I do wonder what your domestic stuff is like if you think the shit heap that is the Hilux is an improvement... Haven't been good for decades

Remember Ford stopped building the Ranger here, because it was taking over first place. But they were still for sale across the ponds in any configuration you wanted. Full four door 2 bench seat, turbo Diesel, 5speed 4X4's were very popular. Ford said fuck the Americans but when pressure was so great to bring the ranger back, the POS they did allow the peasants to own was the size of a fucking F150 loaded with too much B/S. The game is rigged and the public is blind to that simple fact.

Dad got a '78 Chevy C20 Crew Cab full size bed for 12k in '78 . He ordered it . Towing package , ac and bare bones interior .
That truck was a tank . Replaced the engine once with a 250 crate .
That beast pulled a trailer , hauled busted up concrete , wood , building supplies , stone and all manner of building supplies . Sold it in '93 and it still ran around for at least another 15yrs for the local scrap yard .
Got about 5 miles to the gallon hence the dual gas tanks . Got hit from behind by a Camaro . You'd a thought the Camaro went head on with a semi . De Farkin Steeeroyed . Truck had rear quarter and bumper dents . Hitch was fine .
Gotta say at some point will seek out a 96 F350 crew cab , diesel w/full size bed . Yeah not points and condenser but what a sexy beast . And not a dually .

I wish Toyota still made those early 2000s tacomas with the 4dr and 5ft bed. Make it all disc brakes, modern stereo and nav, put that 2.7L 4cyl they have that looks like it came out of a kubota tractor. Damn thing would be unkillable.

I have two extended cab Tacomas, a 98 with close to 320k miles and a 2014 with only 5,500 miles.
I’m in the process of keeping the 98 still going. It has the 3.4 engine, a TRD supercharger, headers, cat-back exhaust…all TRD.
I’ve recently replaced the rack & pinion steering , new timing belt , supercharger belt, , starter , ignition , radiator flushed, new water-pump , all new hoses. Had the auto-trans freshened up. New front and rear shocks. New rubber all around. Never used a drop of oil….
I’d rather pay to get beucoup more miles on her vrs. another vehicle.
I seldom drive the 2014, but she’s my main whip until I finish my 98. That should be next week. 👍

That one reminds me of my First Ford I bought in 73. Had to wait 5 weeks for it to come in after ordering, but the wait was worth it. F350 C&C 60" C-axle, 390 w/4 speed 7.50x16's, 4.1 w/ limited slip. Extras ordered, spare tire w/jack, towing package, P/S & brakes, AM/FM radio $3,150.00 out the door. Installed a 8' flat bed & winch on her, and she paid for her self in the first year.

You guys have any of the right hand drive versions around? We had a bunch and it was a hoot learning to drive those around.

That little 2.0 turbo diesel was kinda torquey and would climb real well.

Not Hilux, but had a right hand drive Land Cruiser. They were great for riding shotgun, popping out the left front door with the M4 was very effective on ass riders and aggressive drivers. So weird shifting with the left hand though...

But yep, those little diesels could lug up some crazy stuff.

EPA standards are based on volume. They get so many gases per cu ft of vehicle.
Everything has gotten huge because they couldn't meet the standards.

Chicken tax. Currently Ford installs seats in their Transit vans to import them, then right after customs strips them out and ships the seats back for the next set of vans. If they don't have more than 2 seats, they're subject to extra tarrifs and it's cheaper to ship seats back and forth than pay it.

The 4 dr cabs are goofy to me, but I don't have a family.

I got a 1998 Tacoma 4WD SR5 back in '98. 2.7L industrial 4cyl. Still driving it. It went across the country and back last winter. Nice to have in certain parts of SD and WY during winter storms.

This summer I got my first new car since '98. Mazda CX-50. Am I going to sell the Tacoma, since the Mazda has AWD and works pretty well off-road? Hell no.

Do a bit of research and find out how much of the equipment on the fancied up trucks sold today is actually mandated by the feds. It's not just the emissions stuff messing up engine performance. The back-up cameras, keyless ignition, computerized everything. It's basically all mandated in one form or another by the feds to satisfy some regulation.

We are implementing everything needed to create a social credit score system in our country. Not saying it will happen, however if they do all it will take is some coding. All new vehicles link back to the manufacturer at this point. All report driving habits now as well.

But with that said I have a '17 tundra that was the last year before the "safety" was updated. The 2017 is the last year that doesnt have external communications or all the nannies.

Which is a good thing because I just had a mouse chew up a few wired and I was able to patch in some new ones without having all the CEL's to worry about. Couldn't shift out of park because the solenoid wires were chewed off.

correct! the rear cameras, the etoh in gas,the GPS,in fact most of the stuff you are forced to pay for, none of which i at least would not buy,is gov mandated.
this is 1 of the big reasons i dislike what Trump is wasting time on. his attention seems to be on the Biden like wars of choice overseas. he could, and should, spend all day going thru EPA,AG,FTC,FCC,ED,DOJ,etc regs and cancel about 90% of them by exec order. fuck congress. also might give him time to amp up more good work by ICE and NGs.

It's interesting what you can buy outside of this country, vs most money pits sold here. But keeping you a slave to debt is the plan,...

another reason for the high cost..
all the mandated safety features
Legacy costs in union (big 3)
smaller margin in cheap trucks
Look at what Biden did to the 5.7; fk'n everyone went to a V6 turbo.. fk that. More moving parts, more shit breaks.

For a lot of stealerships, perhaps even most, the profit (not revenue) on services and parts exceeds the profit from new and used sales combined. They're much more worried about losing the ARR from a vehicle that never goes into the shop than they are some extra cash on a one time sale. Like all big and mature industries, the dealerships and manufacturers are in league with each other not to rock the boat, so it's up to an outside player. Unfortunately, due to the rules and regulations in the US. there's a very large barrier to entry.

All I wanted was a 2 Door pickup because why the fuck not. I don't need 4x4, AC (I do need heat), touch screen, all that BS.

Motor. Steering Wheel. Door. Heat.

And the electronics on these things in otherworldy. Had to get mine during Covid as some asshat crashed into and totaled my car. That was FUN. NOT! At the range the other day some guy was mentioning 80k for a Used Truck. What the fuck is wrong with us,

As least I got the color I wanted and am approaching 100k.
