This disgusts me.

Re: This disgusts me.

As a whole I think gun drives like the one in the news report are ineffective at acheiving the goals that they say they are setting out to accomplish. If their goal was to take in some more than likely non-functional firearms who saw their last rounds many years ago, then I'd say they did it. However, I'd say that if their goal is to reduce gun related street crime and get guns out of the criminal's hands then I'd say they're purchasing tickets for the fail boat ride. If you look at the people standing in that line many of them were middle-aged white people, or grey hairs, who as we all know are the real perpatrators of street crime. How many of those people do you think saw the ad on TV or in the paper and thought, "well I'm not doing anything with that old shotgun that's been sitting in the closet for 20 years. Maybe I'll go stand in line and get $50 so I can go get me a nice steak and pretend I give a shit about street crime." Drives like this sickitate me mainly because of the naivete of the people running them and the fact that they think they're making a difference.

Re: This disgusts me.

"Helen Carons and Andrew Perez, who attended the event, were both affected by gun violence two years ago when Perez accidentally shot Carons' son."

I'm not sure about this, accidental shooting = gun violence?

Re: This disgusts me.

Another loser not taking responsibility for his own actions and carelessness. Incidentally, the biggest killer of children in the home is the swimming pool. Let's see them offer gift cards fir having pools filled in.

This isn't a liberal issue and to brand it as one would be missing the bigger picture. This is tied to the pandemic that makes people think it's always someone else's fault for whatever bad thing has happened. Everyone - lib or conservative is blaming someone else. This asshole thinks that kid died because of an inanimate object....

Re: This disgusts me.

Further news leading up to the event that happened from 10-2 yesterday in Portland is at:

http://www.oregonlive.com/portland/index.ssf/2011/03/second_gun_buy_back_in_six_mon.html

The www.ceasefireoregon.org website has information like, "Since 1994, Ceasefire has hosted an Annual Gun Turn-In, with locations in ten communities in the state of Oregon. In that time, 7,161 firearms have been collected and destroyed ... not able to host a turn-in in 2009 due to lack of funds."

Re: This disgusts me.

Did any Oregonian catch OPB discussing Portland Police effort to get illegal guns off the streets? Their 6 month effort has collected 61 firearms. It makes me wonder if 10/mo is just what they were shooting for...

Re: This disgusts me.

I need someone with an FFL, and a finacial backer to help me out. We can go to Downtown Nashville, advertise a firearms turn in for a $50 Walmart gift card, then recoup the money by selling all the guns through gunbroker at a low low discount of $200 for each firearm. That will post a 300% profit share.

Except most of what gets turned in is non functional junk.

Re: This disgusts me.

I'd turn in a ton of broke ass pellet guns. Hit every pawn shop along the way there.

It'd be awesome if they gave out walmart gift cards. I'd turn in a bunch, and immediately walk to the gun counter and buy something.

Re: This disgusts me.

What about the perp who commits a crime with a POS gun and then turns it in for a $50 reward, The gun gets destroyed... no evidence. Only in America.

Re: This disgusts me.

When I lived in the California bay area many years ago the city of Oakland tried this, they were giving away a pair of tickets to a Raiders game for every gun turned in. One of the big dealers in the east bay, I think Traders, brought down 50 of the Jennings .25acp's and traded them for pairs of Raider tickets. The Jennings were only $39 wholesale back then, the next week the dealer took out an ad in the news paper saying he would give a pair of Raider tickets to anyone that came in and bought a new hunting rifle and scope.

Re: This disgusts me.

I don't know why people would do that. I don't own a single gun that is worth $50. I just hope that before the guns were destroyed they were checked to be sure that they werent stolen.
