thoughts on upgrading TRG

I have been thinking of trading in my TRG-22 (fixed stock 26in barrel) for an AW since I bought a used SAC AICS 2.0, M2008 action, with M40 countoured 24 inch barrel. I really like how solid AICS feels comparted to the TRG. Not that the TRG is bad (does feel slightly hollow if that makes sense), it's just that the other feels that good. I was wondering if you guys think that is attributable to the extra heft of the AICS package?

Therefore I was thinking that before I give up on it, I should possible try a heavier, shorter contour barrel and possibly the KRG folder. Has anybody gone this route and noticed a different feel?

Thanks in advance for your thoughts.

Eric.

Re: thoughts on upgrading TRG

If the AI really feels that great why mess around? I have a TRG and love it to death, but if something were a MUCH better fit for me I wouldn't have any issues moving on. I would probably keep my TRG though and just get the other rifle too!

I have gotten behind several AI's. Overall I think they are much heavier then the Sako's, especially the AX, that thing is a beast.

I love my TRG. I went with the KRG folding buttstock and love it. It was a great addition and it gave my TRG a more "mechanical" feel. The pistol grip is beefy and feels more comfortable to me and provides a nice thumb shelf. I would say give the KRG a try and I would like to think that it would add to your TRG's resale value but I have not seen any for sale in that configuration.

I was in the same situation as you last year. Now I have both. Im not going to part with the TRG b/c for me its like a 3rd arm. However I have to say I am looking forward to spending a lot of quality long range time with the AW! They are both top shelf and you will not go wrong with eighter, if you can I would recomend having both.

If it doesn't impress you, just move on.

I agree tge TRG has a rather light-duty feel to it. However, after humping heavy rifles around, I LOVE that my '42 in 338 is so light! It impresses me more and more every time I take it out.

Different stokes for different folks get what you feel works and just go out and shoot. I own a TRG but have spent a lot of time behind AW's and I think its hard to go wrong either way.

Re: thoughts on upgrading TRG

Maybe everybody is misunderstanding me. Not trying to start a which is better argument. I like both of them, especially the TRG trigger, the the action and how it sets up. It's just that the AI feels more solid and I was wondering if that was a function of weight. That is why I was asking for people that had changed the barrel to a heavier contour or the KRG folder to see if that might change the feel.

Just wondering if I can make the TRG better. Maybe I'm trying to make it something that it's not....

Blondes vs Brunettes
tits vs ass
smart vs Idunno
AI VS TRG

Just get one that lets you get first round hits to 1000... they both are capable... but you may need to buy both to be sure which one is best for you. You don't normally have this LUXURY with regard to women.

Re: thoughts on upgrading TRG

I would try out the KRG folder first.

The TRG is already sort of front heavy and a heavier contour barrel will definitely make it worse.

For a heavy contour barrel like an M40 contour or MTU contour you might need to open up the barrel channel in the TRG stock.

KRG has the action wrench so you can spin off the barrel.

Also keep in mind that the TRG was designed to be "light". It has a medium/light contour barrel, an aluminum "skeletonized" chassis, and fiberglass stock pieces.

The AI chassis is basically a solid piece of aluminum with holes drilled in it to put on "skins". Totally different design approach chassis wise.

Re: thoughts on upgrading TRG

If you could swing an AI do it. I'd go with an AI AE mk3, saves you some money over the AW and you could always sell it pretty quick if you dont like it. Just my 2cents.
