I've got a SPS tactical 223 obviously with a heavy barrel. Is it possible to thread it for a can or will I lose the crown?
As you can tell, I'm a noob when it comes to precision rifles.
Thanks

Re: Threading a heavy barrel (SPS)

It shouldn't be a problem for a good smith....
He'll probably clean/check the crown while he's there...

Re: Threading a heavy barrel (SPS)

No problem and no you won't "loose the crown".

The smith may re-crown it depending on how he does things.

Remember the "crown" is only the tiny edge where the rifling ends at the muzzle. The rest of that is just "muzzle".

Re: Threading a heavy barrel (SPS)

Great, that's for the replies. Like I said, I'm a noob with these rifles.
That's good news then, I'll start looking for a local smith!

Re: Threading a heavy barrel (SPS)

send it to Hooper Ordnance in Alabama. He's on the form here and can thread that barrel no problem. I talked to him about doing mine and will be bringing it to him later

Re: Threading a heavy barrel (SPS)

if i am going to spend the time setting up a factory remington barrel for a precision muzzle thread, i am going to spend the extra two minutes to recut the crown.
