Thumb placement?

Re: Thumb placement?

They float the thumb so they can get the proper 90 degree finger placement on the trigger.

Lots of people do it, because unlike using an AR type weapon or a handgun, wrapping the hand high on grip doesn't lead to very good finger placement which compromises accuracy.

Across a room it doesn't matter, shooting far it does.

Re: Thumb placement?

Just as an added safety note:
If you are trying this technique and you also have a match trigger, be very conscious of trigger control / follow through.
(Press trigger, gun goes bang, release trigger, listen for the reset of the trigger)
If you do not do this, doubling is often the result due to what is essentially a bump fire.

Different grips that fit your particular hand better can often yield the same result as using the "No Thumb" grip method.
With an AR platform, trying various firing techniques to find what works best for you is often as useful as load development.
Start with solid fundamentals and fine tune as needed...

Re: Thumb placement?

I'm just curious...

When you use the "floating thumb" grip on an AR (either 223 or 308), your grip pressure is like what:

Grabbing boobies (medium pressure)

OR

Grabbing ass (Firm grip)

I noticed my AR's (both 223/308) like to be held firmly with a full grip, shooting off the pad of my finger straight back press.

Re: Thumb placement?

I do it on my service rifle as i am lefty rifle shooter an have no ambi safety. I get the accuracy i desire/need with what i got to work with. For me i would call it a medium cupping of the boob as you would need your thumb to really grab it. lol. good analogy on grip pressure though.

Re: Thumb placement?

It gets you 90 to the trigger, you don't drag wood and it stops the sympathetic pinch reflex between thumb and index finger IE the naturally occurring twitch that comes from wiring our brain to use the two digits together.
