U.S.S causing discharge...any easy fixes?

Picked up a used Rem 700 (older action and custom Remington heavy barrel) that was mounted in an Ultimate Sniper Stock. I could have sworn when I inspected it that cycling the bolt tripped the trigger. Upon further inspection I have discovered that the action is seated slightly to the right in the stock, placing slight pressure on that side of the action causing 2 problems:

1. Bolt take down button will not return to the disengaged position. Bolt will pull straight out as a result.

2. (done with dummy rounds) Cycling the bolt following a round being fired may result in a discharge as soon as the bolt assembly is returned to full battery and locked down (thus engaging the trigger mech.)

When the entire action is removed from the U.S.S. neither problem can be replicated without applying pressure to the applicable areas that would be affected by a sideways seating in the stock. It would appear that if some material from that side of the rifle were removed that the needed clearance would then be present and thus alleviate the issue.

Before anyone gets crazy on this issue, I do have a competent smith at my disposal and I'm clearly not attached to the U.S.S. since I have a custom Rem 700 in 308 that is in a McMillan.

Has anyone else experienced this type of issue with a U.S.S.?
Any chance there's an easy fix?

I don't own a USS but it sounds like if you take a little off the stock it would work like normal. I know from experience i put a Jewell trigger in my rifle and it wouldn't work right until i took a little off the stock. it worked flawlessly after a little stock job. I just recently put an H-s precision on mine and I didn't have to modify the stock at all for it to work

That's the direction I figured I'd be going. Not sure if I can tackle this myself with a dremel and may just take it to my smith. Should be easy, but who knows.

Managed to find a dremel sanding drum that would fit without taking material from both sides of the trigger well. Took off quite a bit and remounted, but got a bit worried when I discovered that it shifted more.

Trial and error assembly caused me to discover that if you install the rear bolt (near full tightness) prior to the front bolt that you'll have less lateral movement from the rear.

Looks like I may have shaved just enough material off to get it to work. Still don't like the blind magazine design in this thing. No bolt actions should have a blind magazine, there's just too great a risk of discharge by clearing the magazine through cycling the bolt. Guess the USS will have to work until I can get the $$ rounded up to get another McMillan.

Heck, after reading posts about "home camo" I might even use this USS as my test platform for just that.

Yeah i had one on a win.s/amod.70...mine was so f...edup.the action sat so far to theright that the rifle wouldnt chamber a round.the barrel was almost touching on the right hand side on the back and at the front of the stock the barrel was pretty close to touching on the left side. The aluminum bedding block was molded in at such a fucked up angle it was unreal....I ended up getting my money back.....Imo the u.s.s.is one of the heaviest pieces of shit made..........just my .02

I agree...it's a turd, but I'm saving up for a McM 5A so I'm stuck with it for now. Don't think I'll find a factory stock for an action/barrel from 1990.

as long as its a REM 700 SA (im assuming here) then any REM 700 SA stock would work, just cuz it was made in 1990 doesnt matter. Sell your USS and get you a cheap ole stock for a 700 SA and rock on till your funds for the McM get together
