I received my new 5r rifle today and went about mounting my new USO st-10 on top of it when I ran into a issue. The objective bell (44mm) is hitting the front of my badger 20moa base before I can get the scope far enough back for proper eye relief(pics below). The way I see it I have two options, I can buy higher rings (I am using badger standard rings) but judging by the angle of the bell they may have to be quite a bit higher to get the necessary room i need, or I can shorten the base a bit. What would you do? is there any problems with shortening the base? Such as warping or other issues?

Re: US Optics Mounting Issue

If the eye relief is good & the cheek weld the right height then I wouldn't hesitate to cut that base to make it work. It'd be better if you stopped by a shop of some sort that had a mill and paid a guy with a 12 pack of Bud Light to do it right, but I've wacked them off with a chop saw before.

Vise and a hacksaw wouldn't take long either and you'd have no heat/warping worries.

Re: US Optics Mounting Issue

Thanks for the quick reply! I really was hoping to not use higher rings as I am already going to have to raise my comb height a bit for proper cheek weld. Sounds as though cutting the base shouldn't be much of an issue, I just have not had to do it before and was wondering if there would be any potential problems. Thanks again for the reply

Re: US Optics Mounting Issue

I have the same combo and had my smith cut the front two sections of my rail. He also flattened the last one in the back some to give a bit of clearance on the eyepiece. Once done it I had perfect cheek-weld/scope height for me.

That will be a great setup once you get it done!! Enjoy!
