Alright, I would imagine the answer to this may be pretty obvious (don't buy used elctronics) but because of the potential cost savings, I'd consider a gamble.

I've come across a used Kestrel 4500 that is missing the battery cover and doesn't power on. If I got it for a few bucks, would it be worth sending to NK for repairs? I called them and they are closed already today as I was wondering what the associated costs are. The general price of a new unit is cost prohibitive or I'd just go that route (considering how much I'd actually use it).

Any thoughts or am I crazy for even contemplating it?

you know of the Kestrel trade-in program right? Right now the website is all messed up because of the switch the made the "improvement" ...

However, they used to have (assuming they still do) a trade in program - so even if its broken, I think you can still trade it in for value on another device. I can't find the details because of the MIA website...

I'll try to bid on the one that ends tomorrow DC, I also emailed Chris from kestrel on here to get details on that just to see. If I don't win it I'll advise, I don't want us to get in a bidding war.

So just for your info, I called NK this morning. The repairs are basically $110 for a tuneup and if it can't be repaired, they offer a $50 credit towards a new one. Not really promising on much savings.

You can see the battery corrosion in the pic. The price is now up past $60, only drawback to asking about auctions online.

If it were me, face to face for $20-30 I would have given it a go, because of my mad electronic tech skills, but now its past its trade in value.

Yeah, I didn't get either. It's not worth it. Rachel at NK stated that if it doesn't turn on and the electronics are fried, they do not warranty them and the unit needs to be replaced only for credit. I wouldn't have minded yellow if the price was right.
