Hunting & Fishing VA Resident Geese Shoot

The 2 Benellis and Black Cloud 3.5" BB's were once again on their game.

Another good morning on the mud flats for us.
About 60 or so there when we went in before light.
We bumped them off the spot and set up where they wanted to be.

The entire 60 didn't come back, but out of the 25 or so that did come back, 13 decided to stay with us.

This area is exposed flats off of a feeder creek on the reservoir.
Dry weather and draw down for generation have exposed acres of mud. Indigenous grasses, along with our millet, quickly take hold.
The millet is up and has gained another 6 inches since the first of the month when we shot over it.
Before the first shoot, the geese were keeping it buzzed down pretty low.
With more tender new grasses popping up, they seem to be moving off the millet and going for the fresh and tender stuff.

It's quite a sight and even more of an interesting sound when 12 lbs. of honker come slamming down into ankle deep slop from 25 yards high.

The one or two that weren't dead before they hit the mud, couldn't pull themselves out the crater they'd just made for themselves on impact, making recovery a messy but efficient affair.

We quit at 10 AM because of the building heat.
Man, I'll be glad to see a frost!

Best use I've found for them is Jalapeno Poppers.
Cut the breast meat into 2" cubes.
Warp with a slice of jalapeno in bacon.
Grill until bacon is done, the slather on your favorite BBQ sauce and give them a few more minutes on the grill.

Not real healthy, but damned tasty!

I also sometimes chops the meat up like hamburger, brown it with peppers and onions, and make a chili.

Goose meat is almost exactly like deer tenderloin in color, tenderness, and taste.

Forget your poultry recipes and treat it accordingly.

Curious about the Black Cloud as well.

Been using Kent for a few seasons now. Like it well enough. Refuse to pay for Rem's Heavishot.

We celebrated international Bacon day last weekend, whatever do you mean? Are Jalapenos considered unhealthy?

Re: VA Resident Geese Shoot

I have shot Kents for the previous 5 seasons. This is my first year with Black Clouds. So far they have outperformed the Kents in every way.
They cost a little more, but I'm seeing birds come crashing down dead with one shot, as opposed to two or three shots from the Kents.
I also installed the Black Cloud choke tube, so that may be helping as well.

We had one bird get back on his feet at over 50 yards.
My buddy, shooting the same gun, shells, and choke, laid him down with one shot and I could see pellets hitting all around him in the mud.

I've got a case of the Black Cloud 3" #4's in waiting for the first leg of the duck season.
I'll know more then. But they're kicking ass on the geese.

Re: VA Resident Geese Shoot

DO NOT shoot the Black Clouds with a ported or wad stopper choke tube, like Patternmaster.
The flight control wad needs a clean smooth tube to perform properly.

Re: VA Resident Geese Shoot

Thanks for the info on Black Cloud.

Take the goose breast and pin bacon on it with tooth pics. Broil it on the second rack setting down until the bacon is well done.

good luck
