Out west, but not too far west
Re: Vortex Viper vs Vortex Razor

I have a pst 6-24x50, for the price it cant be beat. The knobs are a little loose, but vortex is fixing that. Its sort of assumed that they will be out sometime early next year. Mine is a good scope for what I paid for it, ecspecially under 1k. Even with the knob issue, I would buy another one and not hesitate. People complain about them, but only about 25 people have their hands on one, I like mine, would I sell it, not anytime soon. The only thing I wish was difference on the elevation stadia, that the hash marks were 1 moa spaced and not 2. not that big of a deal though, ecspecially for what you get in a >1k scope. People will always complain.

Wondering if the 2X cost will ever benefit a casual shooter/hunter.

Thoughts?

I would think the *only* thing that the Razor would offer a casual shooter/hunter would be nearly bullet-proof construction. If you're hard on your equipment, It is definitely a very robust scope. But it's a beast. When I hunt I end up dragging my rifle up behind me in brush at times. I often use the scope as a handle. It's been dropped many times on rocks or logs. I don't baby my stuff and I expect it to perform in the worst conditions. For this sort of hunting I'd probably pick the Razor, due to the fact that the PST reliability is relatively unknown. And until somebody blows it up with Tannerite or throws it off the tower at RO and shoots X without re-zeroing, I'll continue to put my money on the Razor in that department.

All that strength does not come for free. My Razor weighs 37 oz. That's really heavy for a hunting scope, so you need to match your priorities with scope features.

I would have bought a Viper PST had they been available. I had one on order for months. For the balance of LR shooting vs. hunting I do, the Razor is better for me, mostly due ot the ample internal elevation adjustment which allows me to dial to 2000 yds. But I don't consider that a "casual shooter" requirement. If I hunted more and shot less in the field, I'd probably prefer the PST *if* they proved to be reliable.
