Holy shit, lady was in a car wreck and woke up in the morgue fridge the other day. I guess it's more common than you'd think, even today. Mentions another guy who woke up hours before an autopsy and another guy who woke up screaming. There's been one in SA every year the last few years.
That's just gotta be about the most fucked up experience you could have. They don't always catch it either, old graves have been dug up with obvious evidence of someone trying to escape (claw marks, broken fingertips, sign of struggle). Damn. It really doesn't get worse than that. It's actually a primal fear humans have just like drowning or burning but you gotta wonder where it comes from, you know?
Back in the day it was more common and they used to leave the body out to begin decomposing before burial. They also used temporary graves that had escape hatches. You lay in there for a week or two first. But I think they stopped because it got too nasty to continue? And of course there was the period where they drove stakes into the dead.
